I met a girl in Central America and she writes that at the end of every letter... does it have to mean 'I love you' ? Can it mean 'I like you a lot' .. What is the seriousness of this (if any) ?

It means Te quiero Mucho which in English would be I like you a lot. Remember that for the spanish speaking community te quiero is different to te amo in which case would mean I love you. So don't freak. I'm pretty sure it means I like you a lot.

TQM = Te Quiero Mucho
I love you a lot

My Spanish family have a tendency of writing that at the end of letters sent to me! So don't get it twisted... In this context is more like I like you a lot... If it was 'Te amo mucho' then you should be concerned, that will literally mean "I love you a lot"!

TQM: Te quiero mucho
It is i like you a lot, but warmer and closer.
If there is a middle point between "I love you and " I like you" it would probably be "Te quiero mucho"
how old is she, if she is young, it has no importance.
