I have been using the ellipticle (with the moving skiing handles) for some time now, I do it for about 60-90 minutes, and I keep it at an intensity that feels like I'm running through knee-deep dense snow. My endurance seems to be going up, but does anyone know of any disadvantages of doing this instead of running (I'm trying to avoid the prolonged impact on my knees)?

I also burn around 1250 calories per hour, which is almost twice as much as running.

Personally, even though I'm a runner, I find the elliptical to be a more enjoyable workout because of the lack of impact on my joints. BUT- running is a much more efficient workout for running, and involves more stabilizing muscles than an elliptical workout. It's also better for developing your endurance. I think you'll see good results from using the elliptical if you're consistent with your workouts, but it will take longer to achieve those results than it would with running.

calories wise, it might be a little worse, but if you're trying to exercise yet not hurt your knees the elliptical machine is a good idea since it's low impact - I ran track and had horrible shin splints, so they put me on the elliptical machine during practice and it felt much better.
