does it only cover tuition? i need money for room and board... will the fafsa help me get that?

Well i'm a freshman this year and with FAFSA it only determines how much you'll need help with in college. For instance if your family makes a lot of money FAFSA wouldn't grant you much money/financial aid. BUT if your family doesn't make much tey'll probably grant you money that CAN COVER:
books
tuition
room and board!

o0o yeah i ddin't get any pell grants either!

FAFSA is an application to find what funds you may qualify for and your school determines that. If you qualify for enough funds and tuition does not use it all up it is possible to have funds avaliable for room and board.

You will get aid to help you pay for room & board as well as tuition - but that doesn't mean you will get enough to cover all your costs.
