My 5 yr old boy goes absolutely wild after ingesting candies. When he visits his grandmother, besides being fed well, is also fed lots of candies. When I go to pick him up, my mom says, "I can't control him anymore", I'm sure its the sugar rush, because he doesn't do that for me. He runs around with no motive, talks gibberish, and literally cannot sit still, he even begins hitting and biting his sisters for no reason. My girls don't seem to have this behaviour after eating candies. Is it the candies or could my son have ADHD?

Well, it's not ADHD, or you would have noticed this behavior at your house as well. Children with ADD/ADHD do not modify their behavior THAT much from one situation to another. You can rule that out right now. As for the candies... sugar can certainly affect a child's motor level and behavior. It can affect children in different ways as well. While one child may act out in a hyperactive way, another (like my oldest daughter) can turn her into the moodiest girl around. She becomes a grouch, who suddenly thinks it's ok to talk back, treat everyone like trash and whine at everything. So, the candy manufacturers say that their independent testing tells them that sugar does not affect children... have they ever been in a preschool classroom with 12 sugared-up three-year-olds? Yeah... I didn't think so! Then they'd see what sugar does to kids!

No ADHD. Its totally normal. Some kids react worse than others to sugar. And boys are more hyper than girls to begin with. I really have to monitor my sons sugar intake or he does the same thing. Ask your mother to limit the candy. Explain that you know she wants to treat him but you end up having to punish him for his behavior.

Try cutting sugar out of his diet. I think people are to quick to diagnose kids with ADHD. Let your mom know he is not allowed to have sugar at all. Try that for awhile and see how he behaves.

Actually, he's just a 5 year old. He probably knows he can get away with more at Grandma's, and gets wound up while taking full advantage of the opportunity.

It certainly wasn't the sugar:

It just depends on the child but it would appear it does have an effect on your child. If your child had ADHD they'd act like that constantly not just after visiting gma. Tell gma to get him some healthier snacks.

No. It is scientificly proven that sugar does not make children hyper.
