Ok, I know you're all probably sick to death of hearing me going on about 'which car' but, I still haven't bought one and still can't decided whether to go for a Freelander or Nissan xtrail sport - So comments on this would be most welcome (preferrably one or the other). My next question is, Automatic or Manual for best fuel economy?

Yeh, I'm aware of the environmental issue - I do live in the country though and just really want something to get me up off the road, out of the floods and pot holes. The manual/auto question, differing opinions, is a $6000000 question then?

Hi Greenygdv, yeh, i know, i've asked about the Freelander on this q&a board and had all negative replies. My neighbours got an 02 diesel and says its fine. I think i might just buy a mini.....

do not buy a Freelander
I have in the past owned 2 of them, the 1st on a S reg, had the headgasket, gearbox, clutch, engine mountings, drive bearing & cam belt go, this was on 730000 miles & was all done under warrenty to a grand total of £4000.
The second 1, on 02 plate, had the headgasket, drive bearing & gear box go & it was only on 25000 miles!!!!
That too was put right under the warrenty.
I am not alone in this, They are now known to be 1 of the most unreliable 4X4's on the road.
Check on a car reliabilty site, to see all of this is true!
If this hasn't put you off & you really want to buy 1, make sure it come with a very comprehensive warrenty
I now own a KIA Sportage which is GREAT!!!

What car won the JD Powers customer care satisfaction car of the year?
Which 4 x 4 retained more residual value?
Which 4 x 4 gives you environmental control, cruise control, Leather,Heated Seats, Leccie folding heated mirrors,mp3 playing 6 disk changer 200 watt JVC stereo, sat nav for the same price as a basic model of the type you mentioned?
6 year anti corrosion warranty & 3 year unlimited milage warranty
3 years RAC and a free lollipop (ok I lied about the lollipop)

Kia Sportage - Kia are offering a Diesel model for the same price as a Petrol at the moment. A very well packaged and capable car for not a great deal of money. Kia have come such a long way. Worth a look.

They are both the same really.
Manual will save you money on fuel IF you learn how to drive it correctly and not just learn when to shift gears.
Also, if your clutch goes out, you'll just change the plate. This costs about half of what a new auto tran will cost you. Also, if the transmission in an auto goes out, it will go out again and again and again most likely.

freelanders are pish poor toys, designed for those with more money than education. the nissan, again a soon to be depreciating on your garden rust bucket.
either buy a disco, or a rangey... or a toyota landcruiser (mk2) or the izuzu trooper. (not the vauxhall monterey)
autos dont wear out 500 quid clutches... autos dont stall in deep water coz youre in teh wrong gear... mind you, one cant bump an auto....

I have no opinion to either of those vehicles, but as far as fuel economy, go standard shift, as automatics are a drain on gas mileage and performance.
