You do need to make it fun and you'll have to help him the first few times. Get down on the floor and make a game out of it. First spot a specific toy, like a red car, then say "can you find the red car?" When he does, then ask him if he knows where it goes. Once you help him clean up a few times, he'll thens start doing it on his own.
It would be wonderful if once you said "clean up time", the babes would just go and clean up but that is never going to happen. Try fun games and he'll learn that picking up toys is fun.

It is ok to make a game of it and there are songs to sing while cleaning. Also, give him incentive or a reason to pick up his toys. YES, two year olds CAN pick up their own toys.
Try offering a new activity and see how fast the toys get put away.
Two year olds love either going outside and art projects. I always do handprints or some other painting or texture project as soon as all the toys are put away.
It works every time!

I sympathize I have a 2 yr old boy too. I can usually get him to pick thing up if I help him and we make a game out of it. We race...who can pick up the most toys the fastest. If that doesn't work then (I shouldn't really say this) but I use a bribe..like M&M's or ice cream.
Good luck!

my 4 year old does the same thing. I have tried everything. I take toys away, I have even thrown toys away in the trash! I make him take a nap (he hates that) , I don't let him watch cartoons or his favorite movies. The only thing that works for me is to put him in his bedroom and tell him he can't come out until all this toys are in the toy box. His daddy is in the military and away from home alot so he is very attached to me and does not like being in a different room for very long.

Make a game of it. Children love that. If you make is fun, they'll enjoy doing it. Use a timer and see if he can beat it. See who can pick up and pack away the most toys..you or him. Tell him his toys need to go to sleep...that's their home and that they're not happy when they're not in their own beds. (About the whining, tell him you don't understand that language, and you will only listen to him when he speaks properly...then follow through, that's the important bit. 2 is not the easiest of ages, it gets better with time and loads of perseverance. Good luck.

This may seem mean but It took a couple of toys to go in the trash before I got my child to pick up his toys. Of course I tried the playing a game, singing songs, helping him, even got to the point where I literally grabbed his hands and made him pick them up just to prove my point. Finally, there went a box of crayons in the trash, next was his dinosaurs. After he seen that all I have to do is tell him If I pick them up then they will go in the garbage. Haven't had trouble since.

Theres two ways: rewards or threats
You can tell him that if he picks his toys up everyday, then he can stay up late on Friday, or something else that he might want. All kids want something different.
or...
You can tell him that whatever toys are left out at bed time are going to be taken away. You can give them back later if he starts picking up his toys daily.
good luck

dont make it a chore. make it fun for both of u. you should do it with him cuz if u ask him to do it then u leave the room, then it is more of a chore. so stay in the room with him cuz then he'll get more done if ur helping him. Then u dont need to worry about it later. Another suggestion would be to watch SUPERNANNY on channel 3 on a Monday if u have comcast. or even NANNY 911 cuz they help parents keep their kids right. and they also encourage them to do things such as clean their room.
Good Luck

Try making it a game. For example everyone could stand on different sides of the room and you say go then everyone race to see who picks up the most. Always praise your child when you are done.

Make a game out of it. Put two baskets at the end of the room. Race to see who can get the most toys in the basket before you run out of toys.
The thing is to not make it out to be a chore.
