Actually it's not a common belief. Some have twisted the studies for their own purposes. Studies do show a correlation between low intelligence and religiosity but not the reverse. That is to say people of low intelligence do seem to be more religious, not that religious people have lower intelligence.

My brother thinks that anyone who truly believes in the bible is mentally retarded. I do not share that view, as I have been privileged to know some very intelligent Christians. What I think is that there is a certain weakness in them, a fear of death, or loneliness, something like that. I have a really hard time understanding how someone could believe the bible is the word of God, it makes zero sense at all to me. The bible is disrespectful of God painting God as an angry, petty, vengeful man with jelousy issues that needs humans to speak for it.

What would religion have to do with intelligence? Paul, in the Bible was a genious. CSLewis is also. I don't like to blow my own whistle but my IQ is quite high. One has nothing to do with the other. God bless.

This question is getting really old and is a pathetic judgemental dig. Grow up or spew your insults elsewhere.
