Cardio will make your body burn up extra calories and strength training will make you tone up. Try to keep a good balance.
Depending on how much time you have to spend a day, try to find a nicely balanced workout - if you have about an hour a day, do cardio for about 4 days a week - your muscles will need to rebuild and strengthen themselves, so make sure you give them a break. In regards to strength training, don't do the same workout every time. Focus on your legs one day, arms and back another, core another. At least 3 times a week - shouldn't take more than about 30 minutes each.
If you want to go the yoga route ( that's my preferred way of toning up) do a yoga routine (at least 30 mins a day) - that will tone your body, strenthen your muscles (no bulk, just long lean muscle) and increase your flexibility.
