I am in the same situation as you as I got married last year as well. I just wanted to say that Deb has the right answer. I have done some internet research on this recently and everything says you can file married jointly or married separately but either way you have to say you are married.

File as married since it's financially to your advantage. As long as you were married before Jan. 1, 2007, you can claim married status on your 2006 tax return.

If you were married for 1 day you can file married ,You can also file head of house hold or single. But the best for you and your spouse will probably be to file married.Check on both ways married and head of house these are the two you will get more on your return.

You may want to consider "Married filing seperately" for this first year. Pencil it out and see what is going to be the best for you. You can NOT file as single. Married or Married filing seperately are your options.

You have to file either married, or married filing seperately. It doesn't matter what you were all year, it matters what you were at 11:59 pm on 12/31/06.

I had this same problem. I filed "married filing separately", but either way--file married. Its like when you have a kid---you can have that kid 12/31, you still get to claim it for that year.
