I have Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and Nero Photosnap. Is it possible to use either of the programs to make photos black and white with areas of color as well?

There are many ways to accomplish this but here is a quick way. Using layers duplicate the picture onto another layer. Change the top layer B/W then using the eraser tool go in and erase where you want there to be color so the background layer which is in color shows through. I have PS7 and not sure what PS5 has but I am sure it has layers. Do a search for "PS selective color" tutorial to find other ways. There are many on the web.
Hope this helps

what you do is to create a beta channel... first you copy the picture into it, then you delete all the areas from it you want to keep in colors.
or, if that is the faster way, delete all other areas. then you color all remaining areas black, and, unless you took the second way, invert the picture. what you have now is is a picture of black with some white areas, where you want to keep the color in the original picture.

and here is what a beta channel does: it restricts the application of any picturewide filter, such as the B/W filter to the areas where the beta channel is black.

voila.

i am not actually sure that photosnap supports beta channels... but i am reasonably confident with photoshop, although i cannot tell how to find the feature in the menu.

You can use your clone tool or your brush tool. Set your foreground colot to black and change the control from "Normal" to "color". If you leave it at 100% it might be too dark, try it at 80 or 90%. Just use the tool to brush away the color in the picture leaving the color wherever you want it. You can get the tool down to a tiny size using the [ and ] keys on your keyboard to get into small areas. This should work just fine on your model of Photoshop.

Good luck. Play with this. It's very easy..................
