If SSD is your only source of income, no you do not have to file. You must have some sort of taxable income in order to benefit from filing a tax return.
If you're married, a portion of your income may be taxable depending on the combined income of your spouse.

It all depends on how much you make. Plus you can work up to a certain amount and not loose your disability, in some cases. And the rules can very state to state. I can't work and my yearly disability is so low I don't pay state or federal. You're best bet is to contact you're local Social Security Office and ask them. They will know your state laws.

when you get your year end statement, follow the directions on the back to see if you owe federal. if you don't owe, don't file. you may need to figure out what to do about your sate return.
