Define "Just got married"

It depends on your status as of 12/31.

If you "just" got married in January, you still file as single (or head of household).

If you got married before 1/1/07, you file as Married and jointly is usually better but run the numbers both ways to make sure.

By just got married, do you mean before January 1? If you got married in 2007, it does not impact how you file for 2006.

Almost always, it is better to file married filing jointly than married filing separately. However, sometimes this is not the case. (It seems to sometimes be beneficial if one spouse makes a lot more than the other or there are significant personal deductions--especially medical expenses--that belong to one spouse.) The only way to be sure is to calculate your return both ways.

On the other hand, sometimes people want to file married filing separately even though they pay more taxes in order to try to protect themselves from their spouse's stuff.

The link I have included has very good information. Even though they are referring to 2004 tax returns, the concepts still apply.

It is almost always better to file married filing joint. You can do the returns both ways to see which gives you the lower tax liability.

it really depends on your situation. In most cases it is better to file jointly since you get higher deductions and more credits. However in some cases it is better to file separately when both of your incomes are very close and pretty high. Its best to check by calculating it in both ways.
