But my apartment , like many apartments in my city do not allow them . I would love one but I can't basically . So now I am thinking... while yes there are many rescue group where I live , I am now thinking to get a puppy - survivor from Hurricane Katrina . There are still soo many still out there that needs help. This is my question(s) . Does anybody know of some great rescue groups that have pups from Hurricane Katrina , Oh and they will need to ship him to the west coast of USA . Oh and why are some people soo ignorant to Pit Bulls ? And why don't they get that it is alll in the training...... Sorry if I come off angry it just breaks my heart .

Thanks you ,

I'm glad you're thinking of getting a hurricane pup. However... the hurricane was over a year ago... so unless you're using the term "pup" quite broadly, you're probably out of luck.

I went down there and brought some cats back to Washington state with a rescue group I volunteer with. It was SOOOO sad all the pits they had down there. I asked one lady if that's all they were FINDING or if it was just what was "left" after groups had come in to relieve some of the burden. She said 90% of the dogs they found were pits and 90% of THOSE were unaltered. It's such a sad situation down there. On top of it all, from what I personally saw, about 70% of them were HIGHLY aggressive (I agree with you that it's all in how they're raised though!). There was one gray female that I absolutely fell in love with. She was one of the few "sweet" ones that was there. I so wish I could have taken her with me. :'(

Anyway... I'd look on petfinder. A lot of west coast groups HAVE hurricane animals. Shelters nationwide went down there to alleviate the burden on the few shelters that weren't destroyed in that area. If you live in Washington, contact Pasado. They were the group that was coordinating everything around here. They had a whole set-up down there for several months.

Good luck to you. I hope you can get that pit bull someday (and that I can too!!).

PS... Pit Bulls are feared because the media runs wild with stories of attacks. We never HEAR about all the other breeds that attack. Anyone disagreeing with me... do some research. The dog that is responsible for the MOST dogbites annually is... the Lab!!! Any dog can bite and any dog can be aggressive towards other dogs or cats, etc. Pit Bulls need responsible owners and should recieve thorough temperament screenings... but they are not mutants. ANY large dog can do ANY of the negative things pit bulls are known for.

I dont know of any rescues of hurricane katrina dogs sorry. I hate how people think pit bulls are these scary animals i have one and at the moment she is cuddling with my cat lol. Anyways if someone were to break into my house right now they wouldn't get very far! the thing with pitbulls is they will fight to death over something they cherish more than anything. But, they are feared because they can do so much damage and because bad owners have put a rep on them! It breaks my heart too!

To find out if there are any Katrina dogs still available go to:

http://bestfriends.org/

Best Friends is the organization that spearheaded most of the rescues. They have affiliates on the west coast who will need to do a home inspection before they'll let you adopt a dog. They will also ship the dogs to qualified adopters at no cost to the adopter.

(We're actually one of the shelters that is on the list to help with the Katrina and Behruit dog/cat home inspections in our area.)

I had never though to bad about the breed until a Pit Bull Terrier came into my yard. It got away from it's owner. It grabbed my dog by the nape of it's neck and shook it. My dog was MUCH smaller, hadn't barked and was sitting on the front steps. I was on the porch and had to watch in horror as this dog hurt my dog. I finally got between them (probably not my wisest move) and gave my dog a clear shot to the door. I called 911 which sent the police and animal control. The owner insisted the dog was gentle and had never hurt a flea. Still the dog was taken to be tested and checked.

I think it's a very admirable thing to adopt a dog. A Katrina pet would be most greatful I'm sure...just think long and hard about your choices of breeds.

I owned a Pit Bull. He was the sweetest, most loyal dog I've ever owned and I've had dogs all my life.

I also would NEVER own another one. As nice and TRAINED as he was, he would go absolutely crazy when faced with smaller animals. I got rid of him when he almost killed a neighbor's dog.

These dogs are ticking time bombs.

By the way
Dog most likely to bite is ACTUALLY the German sheppard. The dog most likely to be involved in a fatla biting is the Pit Bull.

Someone actually said that the Lab is most likely to bite. This is not true.

I'm sorry if this answer disappoints you. But I have experience AND had the training. Why would anyone want a dog capable of that kind of destruction? Get a lab. Just as nice and will never hurt anyone, even without training.

If you were one of the parents of the small child in Liverpool UK recently who was torn apart and eventually killed by a pit bull terrier, I am sure that you would not think the way you do. He was trained alright but you cannot take the inbred training that still remains deep inside. They were bred for fighting and fighting they do. If you do get a puppy, make full inquiries as to how big it is likely to grow as an apartment is no place for a large animal. It is more cruel than the alternative. Good luck, but give the pit bull a wide berth.....

Ok, to adopt a pet, try petfinder.com! its a great site that shows you ANY breed of pet in your area that needs a home! Trust me, there are SEVERAL!
Pit bulls: People dont like pit bulls because they were origonally bred as fighting dogs. People use them in dog fights, because when they bite, they bite they bite ALL the way, then release. They also have a VERY hard grip when they bite, causeing some owners to break the dogs jaw just to get it to release. dog fighting is thankfully illegal, but of course, some idiots still do it. Since Pits were bred to fight, they make good one man dogs, but are usually not gr8 around strangers. And some ppl are just plain scared of them! However, I think theyre great dogs! Good luck!

Its not just pit bulls and its not all people - dobermans and many breeds get a bad reputation from movies and such - don't let it bother you... you can talk til you are blue and you still won't change everyone's opinion - so no use trying in that respect - just enjoy your life and the things in it that you love.

i like the idea of helping out with a stranded pup from katrina - i'm sorry i don't have any ideas for you tho - good luck

There are amny 'Katrina" rescued dogs in foster care on the West Coast. Contact this organization, and they will put you in touch with the shelters that have Katrina dogs, waiting for homes> http://www.nsalamerica.org/ . that orgnaization is basically America's Red Cross for pets.

they also are running a pit bull article on their home page, so you would enjoy that.

Why don't you just check with the local animal shelter. The dogs there are not any less in need than those who survived Katrina. They all need a little TLC!

PS: I agree that pit bulls are very misunderstood. All the ones I know are great, lovable dogs.
