My friend has 4 or 5 cats and she uses one. She loves it, and as far as I know has had no problems with it.

We had the LitterMaid self-cleaning box when it first came out in the very late 90's and two of our three cats hated it. One was half-Siamese and very skiddish to begin with and hated the idea of the litterbox "moving" and "making noise" after she'd done her business. She still used it, but was always scared of it. Our other cat hated it because she was a big of a robust child and could not fit in it very well and was a little leary of the electronic sensor as well when it would start up the cleaning process since she'd often time do her business and then move outside to scratch and cover - which the box thought meant she'd left.

I've heard from lots of others who think the box is GREAT! Their cats adjust to it well and have no issues. So personally - it might not be a bad investment as long as you FIRST check the return policy on them! After all, if your cats refuse to use it or get spooked by it too much, it's not worth it and that's a lot of money to invest.

I have 3 cats, so I feel your pain. I would love to have a self cleaning litterbox!! Absolutely love it! I can't afford one though unfortunately... even though they aren't that expensive really, I just don't have $30 - $50 to spare on a litterbox. I would say go for it if you have it... but you probably need to use expensive clumping litter. The only clumping litter I've seen is always pretty expensive... but if it's being scooped it'll last longer than the nonclumping since with nonclumping you have to wait until it's full then dump all of it... but with clumping you clean it as it gets messy and probably lasts a lot longer. Anyway, I'm going off subject... Go for it!!

I have 5 cats at home all indoor cats I have two litter maids and I love them my cats took right to them.I do how ever turn it off at night and scoop both boxes in the a.m because with 5 cats the receptacals fill up quick I also line the waste receptacles with 4 gallon plastic bags or the bags I get from the market.I also found that the Ralphs brand clummping cat litter work very well.

I'm actually thinking of getting an automatic litter box as well. I got my kitty, Gomer, three weeks ago and I just have a regular ol' litter box that I've been keeping in the kitchen. I live in an apartment, so I don't have a whole lot of space. Needless to say, it can get real stinky, even though I clean it twice a day.

I've been doing lots of research on various automatic litter boxes, and while it sounds like most people have the Littermaid, I've read LOTS of negative reviews about it (motor is loud, motor stops working, gunk gets stuck in rake, etc.) The two most positive automatic litter boxes I've read about so far is the Litter Robot and the Scoop Free. The Litter Robot is waaaay too expensive for me (about $300!), so I think I'm going to invest in the Scoop Free (about $100).

Here's their website; there's a video demo of it: www.scoopfree.com.

And here are just some of the reviews I've read about:

Good luck!

I used a self cleaning litter box for about a year with 2 cats but never really liked it. even though i used the right litter one cat would use the box, which would activate the timer then the other one would jump in after the other was done. this wouldn't give the second cat's pee enough time to clump, which left the self cleaning forks very nasty. i know cleaning the litter box is a pain but cleaning the self cleaning litter box was even worse for me.

I just bought my 2 cats a littermaid for Christmas and its a lot easier to clean and you clean it maybe once a week, the only thing i don't like is the box cleans itself every 10-15 minutes and it doesn't give the cat pee enough time to clump so it gets stuck in the combs that bring the waste forward and you have to clean the combs off occasionally. My cats love to attack the combs when they move to clean the box. Otherwise i love it.

I came this close to buying one, then went into my friend's laundry room where he has his. It was so disgusting, there was poo all over the tines and it looked like it would be difficult to clean. Instead I use a covered litter box with a liner and Feline Pine litter (a natural pine litter). I feed my cat Science Diet, so she poos very little because it is a quality food with no fillers. Every week I take out the liner and litter and throw it away. I don't have to do hardly anything the rest of the week.

Our two super poopers didn't have a problem using ours, but we had a problem keeping up with cleaning it. Filthy tines on the rake, the receptacle filled up really quickly, the smell never went away, and it was messy and tricky to remove full receptacles. It just wasn't for us. We went back to the old fashioned litter box, this time with clumping litter, and we scoop it every day, putting the clumps in an old litter bucket.

HA! not true, you still half to break them down to keep them clean and from smelling, the poop gets trapped in the rake even with hard clumping litter, litter still keeps getting all over the floor, and one of my cats got caught in one , it malfunctioned and ripped her leg, so as for me, digging in the potty box is better for me and i know i got every little piece, and the cats don't freak out on the motor sound it made .
