First let me say to the person who said that people get tattooed to be badass-get over it! Maybe in the 1970's...but not now, tattooing is an art form and lots of us do it because we choose to have our art on us instead of displayed on a wall. Many cultures believe it is a way to express your inner soul through your body..that is what it is to me.. To the question, I dont think that is the case. I know alot of men who are tattooed..(My man is a tattoo artist) and have issues with people who are jerks about it. Men just choose not to show it.
Women sometimes do. I, for one, am a woman who has two full sleeves, a chest piece, thigh pieces, some on my back and my hips and I have some issue with people who are assholes about it, but I dont much give a **** what people think or have to say.
It could help that I own my tattoo parlor and am a professional body piercer-but I didnt care when I was just a graduate student working a 9-5 job..I think it is just different personalities, not gender.

I think men are less concerned with other people's opinions of their appearance than women in general. Also, alot of girls/women are taught that good girls don't get tattoos. It's the usual double standard. We're taught that it is ok for men but not for us. What else is new?
I'm sure women get tattoos for themselves too, but we also have the stereotypes of the kind of girl who gets tattoos to live with as well. What we are supposed to be and do is drummed into our heads from the time we are old enough to hold a doll. I think it will be different with my children's generation, or at least I hope so. There are more single moms doing it their own way today than at any other time in history and I think most parents try to instill a sense of confidence in their girls that allows them to be their own person in a way that was never encouraged before. There are, of course, exceptions, but that's the way I see it.

i don't think that that is ALWAYS the case, but i do agree that more women are affected by it.
because once again, society has fallen victim to yet another double standard. this time it says that men can have tattoos because it makes them more manly, and girls are suppose to be feminine, old fashioned church women who bake cookies in frilly aprons.
but i have met some guys WITH tattoos who are some of the wimpiest punks that i have ever met.
i have also met some girls WITHOUT tattoos who were the most non-feminine, butch, un-lady-like girls i have ever met.

a lot of people are surprised to find out that i have tattoos, because i am that girl who always gets her hair done, manicures, pedicures, very feminine girly-girl, nice clothes, high heels, but then i have tattoos that are only seen by my fiance.

even though i don't care what people think about my tattoos, i would never get a tattoo in an open place if i didn't want anyone to see it!

i don't care what people think about me or my tattoos but i do think that women are judged more harshly by the tattoos that they have. you have seen it on here with the answers some people give such as. "any girl with a tattoo is a tramp" "only trashy women get tattoos" blaah blaaah blaaah. it's a double standard so some girls who do care what people think about them in general end up caring more about what people think about them and the things they do.

i love my tattoos and you can take me as i am or keep walkin. i think i'm a lot happier and stress free because of it.

I agree it's stereotypes, men expect their women to be all girly girly...most of the time. Obviously it's according to taste but it's probably still associated however little with sailors/bikers etc. But I think women look fabulous with tattoos, biased probably because I'm a girl with tattoos

I'm female and not concerned about it. Mine are for me and I'm the only one who has to like them and know why they are there.

I know some gals who are and I've asked why, and I just don't get it. They said its because they want to be accepted for having tattoos and don't like feeling like an outcast/whore/whatever because of the stigma and stereotype that goes along with it.

Tattoos are art, not a label of how you operate in your personal life.

most of the time this is true. thats why its a stereotype. guys like muddy trucks. worn in boots. mean old slobbery dogs. and tattoos are no different. come on man. are you really that soft in the melon?

Because it puts a unfair label on a woman like she is trashy, or a slut. When men get tats they're strong and manly. We live in a unfair world. But all the haters can kiss my tats if they don't like them

We're known to be opinionated, however some of us are also known not to know when to shut up. You're right. It's your body.
