You don't say what the "speech problem" entails, but a typical evaluation consists of:
1. The history of prenatal and perinatal problems and developmental milestones.
2. Assessment of receptive and expressive vocabulary.
3. Assessment of language capacity (following instructions, grammatical constructions and gestural communication).
4. Assessment of speech (articulation, fluency, voice).

The speech pathologist will use a combination of standardized tests and informal measures (clinical obsevation of cognitive functions, such as attention, memory, level of frustration and problem-solving). S/he may ask you to leave the room after taking the history in order to prevent bias due to the child's behavior as influenced by you.
It's really quite straightforward. It may take a couple of sessions to complete.
You are doing the right thing for your child by seeking early intervention in order to correct the problem prior to starting school. This prevents difficulty in learning to read, social problems, and reduced self-esteem.

When my son was two years old his doctor wanted us to get him checked out by a speech therapist. On the first visit he had a lady come and evaluate him on his speech. Then next visit a guy came to our house and evaluated the other aspects of his communication. It was really nice because he was comfortable in the surrounding and we were there to support him. They also worked with us and told us things that we could do that may help improve the situation. After each person did their evaluations they made a report and decided together if he needed their help or if they would do more harm than good by putting him in a program. As much as I was against this in the beginning it showed me that just because he wasn't talking doesn't mean he is far behind his peers. I don't know if your experience will be the same but hopefully this helps.

My son is 3 1/2 and goes to speech. The first day, his therapist sat with both of us and just talked to him, determining the areas of speech he had problems with, (expressive, receptive, articulation) and how many days a week would be best for him to be seen. He saw her alone for the first couple of months and then moved to group sessions with 4-5 other children (which I think helped him even more). It really does help a lot, he never stops talking now and I am no longer the only one that can understand him! Good luck with everything and I hope that helps!

I just had to respond.

I have just gone through a full evaluation with my son for speech. They also tested his hearing and so on. It's really hard to hear that your kids might have a problem whatever it may be. I feel for you and hope everything turns out well.

My son's first eval they wanted to put him in special ed. And when I say special ed I MEAN SPECIAL ED. Down syndrome kids and all. But long story short, after the full evaulation they determine that he was not slow, hd too hight of an iq to enter special school and just was a late bloomer.

So hold on in there, it will be FINE!

They will do some evaulations of your child, then schedule a meeting to discuss the results with you. The evaluations should include physical evulation of the mouth structure, visual recognition, and spoken portions. Your child might also benefit froma hearing test. Good luck in your journey

Most tuition districts now do trying out...or screening as they name it on all three 12 months olds to examine if a baby demands any form of categories or aid earlier than the kindergarten age. This approach if there are any delays within the baby they are able to uncover the proper application...early. My son simply became three final week and he began speech on the public tuition two times per week, two hours every they usually even ship a van to select him up and convey him again. Wonderful application.

A speech therapist is talk to your child and determine what sounds he needs to work on. The therapist will give you worksheets with words, sounds etc. to work on with your child. It is amazing how quickly this works with some children.
