Music. The music a child hears lasts them thru out their lives. I will bet you that you can't remember 95% of the toys you had at 1 or 2 years old...but most people can remember music...it makes a DEEP impression. We had a personalized song tape made that had songs that include our daughters' name. She LOVED it and still does to this day (she is now 4).

How awesome! My daughter will be 1 on Feb 20th :). She got the laugh and learn house for christmas and it's her favorite thing in the whole world, she loves to push all the radio buttons and dance-best toy ever! Anyway, what my husband and I were thinking of getting our daughter for her birthday is a ride-on toy. They have all sorts of cool ones, some play music or have stuff that light up on the dashboard, and they are all pretty much $30-40. We were hung up for a while trying to think of something for her because she already has so many darn toys! Other people have suggested we get her a ball pit, but I think that would just be too much right now! Ride-ons are fairly small and can fit in a linen closet and can be taken outside or to the park as well. Good luck! :)

Anything interactive is great for this age... things that are educational are good to that way they are learning while they play... My son got the Leap Frog ABC Caterpillar on his first birthday and he loved it still does. It gives the sounds of each letter, sings the alphabet, each letter plays a different song and it says colors. This really excelled his process of learning to talk and say the alphabet in a fun way!

If you click the online store link (not really my store, but Amazon), you will find a selection of handpicked toy ideas from Amazon's collection. These toys are my favorites as a mother and early childhood educator.

A ball pit, make sure you buy lots of extra balls. Anything Fisher Price Little People. Geotrax train (be careful, you'll get obsessed with getting all the accessories).

Give him clothes he can grow into. He's not really going to be too appreciative of the whole birthday thing. (He'll have more fun with the boxes!)
