What model of the civilian AR-15 is closest in design to the military's M-16A4? Is it the Colt MT6601?

As it is manufactured by Colt, which provides the M-16 to the U.S. military, you're probably right, but why do you want such an expensive substandard piece in the first place?
If you're going to spend such serious coin on a service type weapon, step up to a really effective round like the 7,62 NATO, in a FN/FAL or H-K91 (German G-3) which can be had for little more than the Mattel Toy(which we real pros refer to as a "poodle shooter") and either one is a LOT better weapon! In fact, for less money, one can have any of the AK-47 versions, which are still better choices than the so-called "black rifle".

Rock River Arms is supplying a lot of the US government agencies these days, I remember reading somewhere, Bushmaster is also a good maker of AR-15's. Both of these are generally much better these days than colt (at least for the civilan market) and cheaper as well. If you are going to get an AR-15 of any type, stick with either of these two companies, and you won't regret it

as for a specific gun, i won't recommend because even with the M4 designation that want, there are many options

Colt used to own the AR-15/M-16 contract in North America and FN-Herstal had the European miltary contracts. This was agreed to in the early 1960s after Fairchild Aircraft (parent comapny of Armalite) forced Armalite to surrender the "plans" after a tit-for-tat seperation. Decades later, FNH outbid Colt for the US Miltary contract but Colt got revenge by winning a lawsuit in court that was filed by FNH. FNH tried to get Colt to release their process for barrel amnufacture and Colt said "no way". I believe that FNH still has a contract with the US miltary but I am not positive. Armalite is a real good choice (Hell, they designed the thing in the 1950s!).

i both agree and disagree with the above answer......def too many options as to what you want to specify a particular model....depends on EXACTLY what you want/need and your use for it.

i agree that an ak-47 is a most EXCELLENT assault rifle and is cheaper.

but...if you are going with an AR-15...spend the few extra bucks and stick with a Colt.
