Its plain to see religion is responsible for an american president who looks forward to the rapture and by destroying life and starting wars probably believes will make the Lord come sooner. And its plain to see religion causes countless wars and terrorism in the middle east not to mention 9/11. 100 years from now when the lord still hasnt come and if we havent started a nuclear holocost,
will we give up our beliefs in a man in the sky and care about one another or will we end up destroying it all.

Yes, humanity should survive superstition but countries need to think about education - they need to accept nothing is more important - every country should be doing its damndest to get the best system in the world. America has a terrible record in this. Teaching children to think is the best way to undermine fundamentalism and 'belief' based thought in general.

However, 9/11 was not religious in nature - foreign policy caused that. Islam is one of the greatest evils the world will have to face since a violent and savage fundamentalism seems to be built right in to it.

If we are very lucky, all the religious nuts will just kill each other off without making the planet uninhabitable. That's not to say that all religion must die, but I wouldn't shed a tear if certain people would strap the explosives to themselves instead of just getting their followers to do it for them. Also, if certain people would grab an M4, hop in a hummer, and drive around Baghdad to look for IEDs and insurgent ambushes instead of just talking about how great an idea this is, I think I'd really have cause to smile.

The ancient Mayans/Aztecs had this calender that was technically/mathematically correct. However, their religious guesses were wrong. But, they accurately predicted a solar event 12/21/12. Now, they said the world would end but they've been wrong b4 on events, but not the date. Soooo, maybe, this existence will end, including our religious dogma, and the future inhabitants will learn to do time travel b/c the don't have religious dogma to hold them back...then they'll travel back to Old Testament days and have a bunch of Jewish guys think they see or hear God (but it's really them) :-)
Anyway, that's one theory I heard...

President Bush can no sooner bring on the rapture than you can. You may not agree with what he does but at least he stands by his convictions with great love for this country. When the rapture comes and only non-believers are left, do you really think this planet will be better off? Do you honestly believe that those left on the planet will get along better than we all do now? Just in case, read Revelation so in the end your not surprised.

It's hard to say, but it won't be happening any time soon. I think that, for now, the most important thing is to focus on encouraging "positive dogmas" (e.g. "thou shalt not kill"). The fact is, most wars have been caused by disputes over territories and resources, not religion. If religion were serving the purpose of discouraging greed and war, I don't think it would be that bad. Unfortunately, violence has often been permitted or even encouraged by religion; if humanity is going to hold on so dearly to their delusions, I wish they would at least be pleasant about it.

I hope so. Personally I think that there is a shift in mentality on the horizon, with modern physics REALLY starting to intrude on religion in a big way. The problem is that will polarise the religious nuts out there all the more, so I see a lot of darkness ahead before that shift happens. Hopefully we won't run out of time before that happens, but maybe there's room for a bit of faith here... ^_^

Humanity is not mentally evolving in a uniform manner. There are millions of us Atheists with advanced brain functions that are capable of managing a sane world right now. Unfortunately, the principle of 'majority rules' is in play and most of the meaningful power in the world is in the hands of a sub-species of superstitious backward thinking theists

I know religion is soooo terrible. Look at what filthy religion did in the last century - over 200 million dead - in countries like the USSR, China, North Korea, North Vietnam, Cuba, etc.

Wait a minute - duh!! - it was atheism that caused that. Slaughters that outnumbers the deaths of the Crusades by a ratio of 23:1. (And the Crusades covered 400 years compared to atheism 70 years).

Thank God that religion is still around to keep the human race from extinction.

Haven't you heard of the "God gene?"

Are you a fan of Joseph Stalin? Does Atheism have a better record on fighting wars? As for wars in the name of God, it's called breaking the 3rd Commandment.

Do Atheists have a better record for caring for others? Do you serve as much food to the homeless or give as much free medical care to the sick as religious people do? WITHOUT docking peoples' paychecks, using only money donated by atheists? Or do you expect your government to care for them for you?
