Lightening is tricky. I wouldn't go more than a shade or two lighter than your own color. If you want a big change, go to a salon now, so you won't have damage and have to get to get corrective work.
Loreal is the best at-home stuff.

No you don't have to strip your hair color but i will tell you to watch what color base you are using. For instance do you have color on your hair now? If so just watch and the haircolor that you buy at the stores in the boxes usually come out about 2 shades darker. Your best bet is to go to Sally's or Barnum's if you want to do it your self and look at the creme colors. Everybody makes a creme color but the bases usually don't grab as much. Just an FYI ash colors have a green base.

Please wait before you do anything. I would highly recommend going to a salon and paying the $50 or whatever. My hair turned green this summer when I tried to lighten it, and I do know a bit about haircolor. It's just not worth the risk. If you're low on cash, consider going to a beauty school and having a student do it while an instructor supervises.

go and look at the color you want then go a shade lighter. I like loreal prepherence the best it does dry out your hair. or just spend the money and go to the salon and get it done right. it will be money well spent.

well you will need to lighten all of your hair up first. then you will need to tone it back down to where you want to be, that way you will have your hair all evenly colored. i highly suggest that you don't use the box dyes. they are SO damaging to your hair. i would go to a professional. believe me, if you knew what was in those box dyes you wouldn't be using them anymore.
