I seem to always toss and turn at night. I turn to the side and can't stay comfortable for more than a minute, having to turn again. When I lie on my back it's usually the best but eventually I turn to the side. I have about a 3 inch matress cover made out of the same material as tempur peidc matreses, however, I don't think the mattress the apartment came with is that great itself. My back is always tired in the morning because of this problem, and I end up sleeping longer than I want to because the time I'm in bed i'm not getting actual deep sleep.
help!

Buy a decent mattress. You can't afford to waste your time at College.

Think about how much time you spend each 24 hours in bed. Think about how important it is to be awake, well rested and not in pain during the day. Your bed is actually one of the MOST important purchases you can make right now. It is mainly your mattress but you should think about your pillows too. If you buy a good mattress, you can expect to own it a long time. I have a good mattress and box springs, a good mattress cover, nice sheets, and the right pillow for side sleepers (I sleep on my side). I get a great night's sleep.

You need to invest in a good quality mattress or futon and Ikea doesn't make good quality mattresses. Futons don't last very long but there is nothing better than a new one and they are cheap. I had futons for years while I was in college and then the first few years of working. Expect to replace them every few years. They get matted down after awhile no matter what they are made of. What I did that helped was I would put the new one on top of the old one. This gave me a little extra padding as the newer futon got older and more hard.

A good mattress will last a long time but they are very expensive. To get a good Queen sized mattress you should expect to pay at least $800. They haven't changed much in price over the years. Buy a name brand. I bought a Serta Perfect Sleeper and love it. I bought a Queen anticipating my eventual spouse. He loves the mattress too. Our mattress is going to have to be replaced soon. I have had it for about 13 years. I went to the mattress store, laid on the all the choices, and then bought the nicest one I could afford (there are MUCH more expensive options that I wanted at the time.) I have not regretted my choice.

I've inlcluded a bunch of articles in the order you should read them, more or less. These might inspire you to invest.

A good mattress will really help you sleep better. A good mattress will probably last about 10 years. If you are sleeping on a mattress older than 10 years it is probably time to replace it.
