for a side view? It is a common sold object you see everyday.

(I used this question when I devised the first Mensa test in San Francisco Bay Area. --- to this date, no one has ever answered it successfully on an IQ test (fill in, not multiple choice.)

A cone does not look like a rectangle from its front view. - sorry

2007-01-19 06:07:34 · update #2

Sho nuff -- You see it every day, it is so common. Just think, what di you see that looks that way? You might start by thinking what is rectangular from the front view? The ask what does that look like from the top view?

2007-01-19 06:09:51 · update #3

Tube of toothpase is not solid, it can easily be reshaped. Plus from the top view it is not a circle, it is rather rectangular.

2007-01-19 06:16:29 · update #4

Remember it is something seen everyday of your life, regardless of you hobbies or occupations.

Tooth paste tubes are not solid objects except when new. When new, they all have caps or threaded tops. Plus even when new, they are rather not solid. -- but it is good guess, ----- And I am impressed by most of you folks. I am beginning to think you are "smarter than the average bear".

Sorry but we do not see a pencil everyday. Pens, computers, etc. and -- a pencil is not triangular from top to bottom from the side view. And if it were, it would not be rectangular from front view. ---- But damn good guess - UFO - you amaze me, -- I would say you are right up on top of the IQ ladder -- along with some other folks answering this question.

"Black dragon" You have just described some of my faults
" being absent-minded, linear thinkers, narrow-minded, myopic or any number of other mental road-blocks."

But you must admit - You and I , and those with high IQs, at least, have the potential to think our way toward the truth (whatever that might be).

"effin" - You seem a little bit bossy today. Are you always that way?

2007-01-19 06:31:07 · update #8

"N H" -- Wow! .. Ok you show the most enthusiasm. It doesn't matter what your IQ is (I think it high)... but it doesn't matter in your case. You will always have a head start seeking out the truth. Why? Cause you are so damn enthusiastic.

I wish I were.

"UFO" -- Is ok with you?, if I tell you "I love you". -- (Whoops, I tend to be a little emotional at times.)

Well, for future guesses, feel free to e-mail me.

And, now, it is time that I admit that I didn't believe there were that many smart people on this chat group.

I admit it, there are a lot of high end intellects on this chat group.

Thanks for participating.

"pirate" - that is true, some people don't leave their houses. (but, remember, when I said "everyday" , it would be everyday in 99% of your days- Is that ok with you?)

.. and, of course, a blind person would not see this solid object, but Helen Keller would have known about this object.) Whoops, ignore my Helen Keller comment. That info, was not on the original Mensa IQ test. -

Stacy - Remember the Mensa test said, it is something you see every day. (you. as in most people, if not all people see it everyday)-- but damn good guess.

Wow! this is the smartest group of people I have seen since I was in President Kennedy's "Rand' think tank.

Please, all of you e-mail me. Lets form a special think tank on religion and spirituality. If it works right, it could increase each of our individual awareness by 4 or 5 times what we now know.

"existence" - good try, but remember it must be a sold object (non flexible) non-rearrangeable. -- but welcome to our crew of deep thinkers.

Dear "Jack" Please, Don't be disgruntled. remember, it is something you see everyday. I can give some non-hint hints but if I cross the line, The original members of my Mensa Chapter would really be upset.

dear Khalin,
A scallop shell, whatever it looks like, is not something you see everyday.

Excuse my typo. I am sure you folks have read me clearly but, when I wrote "common sold object " I meant "common solid object"

Wow, tough one. Can't wait to see the answer. I don't have a high IQ, but I'm going to give it a go.

My best guess at the moment is a helicopter: Circle from top, roughly rectangular from front, and roughly triangular (b/c of tail) from side. I'll keep working on it.

Possibly a half gallon of milk or OJ

The top of the carton usually has a circle screw on cap, the front view is a rectangle and the side has a triangular shape that goes to the top of the carton.

Although one might not see that everyday if they don't eat breakfast.

The only other thing I can think of would be the earth. If you look at it from above, it has a cirular shape, if you look straight ahead you get a perfect rectangular view from you field of perception without moving the eyes. Then if you keep you head straight but turn your eyes to the right or left you get a smaller view range at one point, but then as the eyes begin to move back forward toward the front view your field of perception goes from a common point and spans out like the butt of a triangle into a wider view until you are front facing again and are in rectangular position with the horizon. Helen Keller would know of the world, even if she couldn't see it. =) However I don't think that was the answer. lol But it is the only thing I think someone would inevitably see everyday, even if they weren't thinking about it. However you said the object was sold so that cannot be it.

You said a common SOLD item, not a common SOLID item.

I say Tube o' Toothpaste, and to this answer, I adhere. The kind that can stand up by themselves on the tooth-paste-coming-out side. It's a flip lid, not a screw on lid. And then I seen a bunch of other folk had also picked that answer.

My guess is that there are as many geniuses in the San Francisco Bay area as there are anywhere else. Maybe the dental hygiene level is just a little lower?

Ok, I'm going to say a fist. If you put your hand in a fist, the top looks like a circle, the front looks like a rectangle, and the side looks like a triangle. (seriously, make a fist with your hand and take a look)

I don't think this is correct, but I would really like to know the answer. Please message me.

EDIT #1

I still think it's a fist. A fist does not shift its shape. A hand can become a fist but a fist can only be a fist. Kind of like a lap. You can only have a lap when you sit, it ceases to exist when you stand up.

This may not have been what you are thinking but I still think it works...

I could see a cone if both front and side view were triangles....I'll keep thinking.

Edit: Yes, tube of toothpaste.
Excellent.

2nd Edit: I'm not sure what a wood splitting wedge looks like...does it have a round top?

3rd Edit: A pencil eraser? The kind you stick on the end of your pencil. It fits the requirements.

What? you aren't going to give us the answer????
Grrrr....if this wasn't such a good brain teaser, I'd take back my star!

my first guess was a tv (not the OLD big block shaped ones, or the new flat wall-hanging type), but then I was think maybe a lampshade. Its round from the top, triangular from the side, and if u look at it from the front, its an odd rectangular shape if u flip it sideways! lol

The problem with IQ is it only a measure of potential intelligence.
High IQ does not preclude people from being absent-minded, linear thinkers, narrow-minded, myopic or any number of other mental road-blocks.

Often a persons IQ is towards only one certain field of endeavor.

I personally agree with the answer of a toothpaste tube, but then my IQ is only 138 or so.

Possibilities:

A slice of Bundt cake (not quite a circle, but close);

A bellows or similar foot pump for blowing up an air mattress;

Many change purses (but not all);

Many desk clocks, CD containers, or make-up kits;

A round of Gouda Cheese cut along the diagonal.

EDIT #1:

A shower head?
