Some questions about being a travel agent:
1. Do they get to travel?
2. If yes to 1 then is it cheap for them to travel?
3. How much money do they make?
4. What do they do?
Thanks!

1. Yes and No. The deals are not going to be as great as you might think. Good travel agencies are always going to get offers for "fam " trips which may be free or heavily discounted. How your boss gives away these free-bees to the employees may be a problem though. You might get some discounts at hotels if you call direct as well.

3. How much they make depends on ALOT of things. Salaried agents tend to not make that much -maybe from 25k to 50k depending on where you live. Commisioned agents have alot more room to expand. I know commisioned agents who make well over 100k'

4. There are two main types of agents. Corporate and Lesuire. Corporate are fast paced agents and deal with alot of customers with less complicated trips. Mainly corporate trips. Lesure tend to have fewer customers but more complicted trips. With the lesure side you find people who will branch off and specialize in certain things-- like Cruises for example.

I am a Travel Agent....

Yes we travel a alot...

It is very cheap to travel if not free to travel.I am going to Maui in June for a week staying at the Ritz Carlton for free.....why? Because I sold so many of their rooms at that resorts and got a week of free nights in a oceanview room ...I am using points from a different tour operator I use to book travel for that I get for each sale and then can use for whatever travel purposes I need in this case air for my husband to Maui...

FAM trips are how most travel agents travel....FAM= Familiarization trip...Independant FAM trips are what you want to take...I just had one cross my desk for $199 with air and 4 nights all-inclusive to the carribean....Independant FAM trips mean you do what you want when you want just like a regular vacation.....The other type of FAM trips which are usually even less money then that are the kind where you are dragged to every hotel on the island and given minimal time to yourself to do what you want.....those pretty much suck and you are usually with a bunch of old ladies who whine and complain about everything.....

The money depends on where you work...I work for a home based host agency which happens to be my father who owns the company so my payscale is pretty good.I make 75% of all of my commissions......To give you an idea I booked 3 Hawaii trips last week...These were $4500 trips and my commision was 14%, so it wasabout $500 per sale commission.....I make 75% of that so I had a good week last week but certain times of the year it dries up....Home based agents who do this usually are responsible for their own advertising though....which can be costly.....So working in an agency or with a tour operator you will probably make anywhere from 22,000 a year to 35,000 depends on the niche of the market.Cruises dont make squat......depends on your pay scale etc.etc....Some weeks I was making $1500 a week during the summer vacation months and other months.....almost nil....Generally Nov and december things quiet down and the rest of the months are busy busy busy....

Hope this helps...

My husband became a travel agent recently through a company called World Ventures. We discovered that it is the perfect business for us because it's all about TRAVEL, which we love. So now we help people save tons of money on travel and also help them own their own online travel business, if they're interested in that.

Just like Expedia or Travelocity or any number of other websites, you can search for deals on flights, hotels, cars, etc. on WorldVentures' website. They offer incredible deals on travel. Go to my husband's website: http://bobstottern.worldventures.com

You may be looking for a new career as a travel agent, or just a way to make extra money from your computer. And you can make a LOT of money from this business with very little investment. WorldVentures is a brand new travel business, just over a year old. Get in on the ground floor like we did; that's where the opportunity lies. Please go to my website below and surf around. See what you think, and if you have more interest, feel free to contact me. See you on the beach!! Julie
