Stay in New Jersey. You will save lots of money. Plus you are minutes outside of NYC.

Hard to find 'cheap' accomodation in Manhattan, although Go Travel have offers for NY from £300pp inc flights. The downfall there is that you dont know which hotel you get 'til you get there. You are given a set of 4 possibilitiesand find out on arrival.
I would recommend trying Expedia.co.uk/Thomson/Thomas Cook and once you find something in your price range use Trip Advisor. You could also get some ideas from a travel agent. Would always recommend Trip Advisor though - reviews, candid pics - perfect. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk
I have been twice. The first time I stayed in a v. cheap Holiday Inn - wouldnt recommend it. Cheap, but you could tell.
Second time I stayed at the Westin Times Square. I would recommend there, although slightly pricey.
See the list in order of popularity here - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Hotels.html
Other than that, you'll have a GREAT time - enjoy!
PS Dont pay for a transfer if you're landing at JFK - taxi is a standard $50 - you prob won't get a cheaper rate.

I assume by New York, you mean Manhattan? If you do, I.m afraid there is nothing cheap in Manhattan. You could try checking hotels on expedia.co.uk...
New York is a fantastic city, have fun!
