in English? I've noticed that this group of foreigners are very actively disturbed when you speak Spanish to them? I speak Spanish better than most AMericans and have lived long periods of time in Latin countries. Why is this? I have seen them get down right angry about it?

Anti sucks: Yeah, I kinda got that impression myself. They think they have something over on us. Ha! Littld do they know. Just another point. I complained in a social group when a couple of our well bi lingual hispanics started chatting it up in front of the rest of us in Spanish. I tolde them in Spanish, we live in the USA, please speak English for the rest of the goup. They laughed and agreed. But someone else who was a Latin LaRaza type hit the ceiling because I had asked for this consideration from my friends. Turned into quite a hoopla. Thankfully the crazy Latin isn't around anymore. Maybe she went back to Mexico ..I can hope.

Tita: Latin friends are not the problem. It's those who one doesn't know. While I agree with you generally, I have found Latins (mostly Mexican) who do not know me, to be very hostile when I attempt Spanish with them, as if it is an insult. They have no problem speaking it to each other however. Seems kinda like they have this special ability they share and when a Gringo comes along and has it too, they don't like it. Almost feels like racism to me perhaps?

I think what has really made them mad is, they can not talk about you without you knowing what they are saying.

I speak Spanish and several other languages.I live in Arizona and Ive never experienced that.
Since I am a natural blond(bragging lol) with fair skin and blue eyes, people that don't know me are usually surprised that I do speak Spanish.
But Ive never had any Hispanic get upset when I speak English or Spanish to them.
Just my own experience.
80% of the USA speaks English. If they choose to learn another language they can .But no one that is an American should ever have to learn any language but English. We are a majority English speaking nation.
rare...I have yet to meet any one or encountered any thing that has ever intimidated me.........

This Pachuco says, "Se vale guey. Al que no le guste que me busque!"
Spanish is as American as English. The one most identifiable icons of Americana is the Cowboy Culture that is 100% Mexican in essence and substance!
Spanish has been spoken in Aztlan since the 1500s and was spoken by the Hispanic troops that fought in the American Revolution.
Get over yourselves, white peeps. You did not create America single handedly – that is a myth pushed by Disney and Racist.

you cant say that all of these people (immigrants) will get upset when you speak to them in english or spanish. I have never experienced this. Whatever group you are talking about, you have to remember that they are people to and not everyone is happy and jolly all the time. We are humans and have feelings. You dont know where they come from and what they have been throught and maybe they cant cope with there experiences as well as you. Dont stereotype. By the way its a fact that Latinos are the fastest minority to learn english.

I admit, it does make me a little angry when a couple of Hispanics are chatting when I wait on them. I do think it is rude.
Also, at the grocery store, when a hispanic is waiting on me, and begins speaking Spanish to the person standing behind me. I do not feel they are talking about me or anything, just chatting about the weather or whatever, but it is rude.

I find it to be exactly the opposite. But it is important that you not assume that they cant speak English. If they can, then they might be a little insulted that you assume they dont. Also, are you butting into their private conversation to say something? That is sometimes rude. Try and use regular decency when speaking to anyone. I find spanish speakers to be relieved and suprised when i speak spanish to them.

Well I dont know, to which kind of Latin Americans you have bumped into. I am a Latina and Very proud of it, and most of my friends are Americans they speak English and I speak their language, and at the same time they love when I talk to them in Spanish, they even ask me to teach them.... The only thing I have to say is that we all need to get along no matter who you are and where you come from, treat people nice and with respect, stop having prejudice against people because of the way look dress or where they come from. Because after all we are all human beings made of blood, flesh, and bones, and the brevity of life is very amazing, we all should just try to live in peace and get along with every body:)

It's just another form of their arrogance at who they think they are.
If you notice, talk to them and look them in the eye, they won't make eye contact. It's like they have something to hide.
Klingon would be great.

Maybe because they have a right 'not to like' something just as you have a a right 'not to like something'. And no, I'm not Mexican. But it seems to me that there are a lot of people here who are extremely intimidated.
