Paint is one of the cheapest and most versatile ways to redecorate.

You can make BW photocopies of your fav family pictures, then crinkle them up and decoupage them to the cabinet doors. Likewise with pictures from magazines or art books.

You can remove cabinet doors and use curtains instead. Or change the other window treatments in the kitchen.

You can change out the hardware on drawers and cabinetry, even replace with other things. You could fit odd pieces of silverware to use as handles, or put big marbles or beads on for pulls.

You can use chalkboard paint on either cabinet doors or an empty place on the wall. Then you have a way to decorate anyway you want with kid art, or use for messages, recipes, grocery list, or whatever.

You can start an herb garden and put it near the kitchen window...this is a pretty houseplant that is also functional. If you wanted to personalize the container for it, get a plain one and mosaic marbles, or broken china, or whatever.

Get a new tablecloth or placemats for the table.

Change out the faucet or light fixture.

Do something cool with the rangehood or backsplash, such as mosaic or accent tiles. Tiles don't have to be expensive, you could use odd ones. Even if they cost more, you don't need that many.

You could mount things on the wall, use plate rails for your fav heirloom pieces or your good china...if you are into music, frame and hang sheet music for your fav songs. If you are into canoeing, a paddle to accent above a series of hooks for coats...or put hooks on the paddle and hang it horiz on the wall. Use your imagination. Old tools, toys, kitchen equipment, etc can all be decorative or made functional. For example, old crocks can hold kitchen gadgets.

First of all, give it a good clean. Cupboards inside out. Scrub the work surface. Make the windows shine. Remove all clutter. Don't allow stuff that aren't decorative outside the cupboards. Get some nice baskets to put on the top of cupboards for storage. Stacks some decorative baskets on to of fridge. Buy a few pots with herbs and put on the window shelf, on the worktop or kitchen table.
Voila!

First, get that clutter out! Either sell it, donate it, or toss it. It's not doing you any good. You can get a set of vacuumable storage bags to flatten the things you do need to store. Make sure you're using those upper shelves (keep a small footstool handy). Consider removing the doors from at least some of your cabinets altogether. You can arrange the best looking stuff there and it will force you to keep from overstuffing it. My mom used to cover our old cabinets with Contact paper, it looked pretty bad then, but maybe they've gotten better in the ensuing years. You could also try attaching corkboard or thin metal to some or all of the cabinet doors.

How about one or many of the following:

A fresh coat of paint on the walls and the ceiling. Fresh ceiling paint really brightens up a room.

Change or paint the cupboard doors.

Change the handles on the cupboards.

Freshen up the tiles by deep-cleaning the grout, painting the tiles or tiling over them.

Change the lighting (ikea lamps are dirt cheap)

Put down funky floor tiles such as the ones B&Q do.

Frame some photos of your friends/family and put them up in a group.

Good luck!

I made a border around my kitchen counters with a sheet of tin I had in the attic. I measured about 4" tall and cut it out of a sheet. I then measured 4" and creased each section to make it look like a 4x4 piece (I did this with a hammer and a board). Then I punched designs into each piece with hammer and nail. I then sprayed it with spray paint to make it look rustic with brushed nickel paint. I nailed it up with tiny finishing nails I had spray painted as well. It looks really great and was cheap.
