New York City -- if you have never been there --- you will realize soon enough seems to be the center of the world. You have all of what humanity has accomplished (threefold) in NYC.
There are obviously downsides to NYC but you need to be a certain breed of human in order to like it there or live there. You can't help where you were born. It's just happens.
You have literally hundreds of cultures all coexisting in one single environment. You have the arts (dance, theater, visual arts) all at your disposal at every single moment. You can create and obtain and view the arts almost whenever you please. You have a place that never goes to sleep (literally)! Whether it's food or entertainment, it's available to you. You have technology being utilized and the development of our existence growing before your eyes. Movies are being made and you'd never even know about it! Magazines, literature, art, clothing, toys, food.... being created, distributed, produced, idealized constantly.
The people make this place. You can have Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Indian, Israeli, Ethiopian, Russian, Irish, Spanish, Cuban, Hawaiian, Greek and many other cultural foods anytime, anywhere!!
New York City is what all cities strive to be. An environment of flourishing concepts and creativity. An overwhelming but highly productive city.
Lastly, it's history is uncanny. You will find places with history as well but New York, in my opinion, surpasses them all. The quest for freedom lays in Ellis Island. New York is one of the cities that began our country. Importing and exporting of goods and people!

The New York of 2013 really has to be experienced firsthand to be appreciated. What is most amazing about it is what an incredibly diverse and dynamic city it is -- with more types of shops and restaurants on one square block than exist in the whole of many U.S. cities -- while at the same time, it is very safe (Manhattan at least, though most of the rest of the city too) and well-run from a visitor's perspective and easy to be in. It's kind of a modern miracle, and completely unexpected considering what a trainwreck the city was in the 1970s and 1980s. Millions and millions of tourists come there from around the world every year for a reason: it's an amazing place with an energy that has to be seen with your own eyes. You really do feel like you're at the center of the world when you're there: literally with the United Nations HQ, but also because it's the center for U.S. media and publishing and theater and finance (Wall Street obviously), fashion, and on and on.
It could be all that and yet be totally unappealing to visit (like some other world cities are), but yet I feel safer there than in my midsized Midwestern home city. I've never had a single problem on the NYC subway. Literally (yes, literally) every ethnic group in the world lives or visits NYC, and yet they all get along with only minor exceptions. I know I sound like I'm describing some crazy paradise, but that really will be at least your perception as a visitor. It's a remarkable place.

ELLIS ISLAND. If anyone in your family came to the United States through Ellis Island, that alone is worth the trip. It is a hauntingly beautiful place. Take a tour with a National Park ranger and learn about the millions of people who came from hundreds of other countries to try to find a better life for them and their families here.
I visited there in the winter (when it was almost empty) and was able to spend a lot of time at the exhibits. I went back a few years later in the summer when it was crowded. With all the people I could better imagine what it must have been like when passengers were being processed to gain entry to the U.S.
Truly a unique experience in all of the world!
