I found it on-line in Canada. The generic name is sumatriptan. Of course, it is much less expensive there.

When will the patent run out? Imitrex has been around quite a few years.

As the previous responder indicated, it will become available after the patent runs out. In this case, according to the FDA website, there are two generic manufacturers that have "Tentative approval" which means that everything they have needed to do from a chemistry and manufacturing standpoint is done - they are just waiting for patent expriy. According to the letters posted, the earliest that they can get approval in June, 2007. There are other patents extending to 2012, for which the generic manufacturer stated that they don't infringe, or they are unenforcable. However, the brand sued them for patent infringement, which means - that if the brand wins, they can't alunch the generic until 2012. Otherwise, if the generic wins, they will launch sometime on or after June, 2007.

Sorry that I couldn't give a clearer response, but this is the reality.

When the patent runs out. All drugs are put on a patent for X number of years when that runs out another company has the chance to make a generic and sell that.
