I found the following site very helpful when choosing a dog...In addition to information on Male or Female...it also provides information on Purebred vs Mixed...Adult vs Puppy...Big vs Small...etc.
Take a look at it...it should help some with your decision depending on what you are looking for in a dog.

It really depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking to breed? Are you just asking which has a better temperment?
The biggest difference between the males and females which is as close to universal as it gets is that female dogs kill grass while male dogs kill shrubs.
In my experience, male dogs are not as attentive, but are more playful. Female dogs are more protective of the home, but not as protective away from home. Male dogs will also fight more often with other males, while females may be a little more receptive to other females.
If you are going to get multiple, get a female to start. If you have friends with dogs, consider the sex of those dogs if they will be visiting.
Otherwise, it doesn't matter. They're both great, as long as you're a good owner.

Males urinate on objects and urine is hot and acidic and will kill/damage plants. So a male dog will damage any leafy plants that it pees on and in the process of territory marking they will sometimes pee on things they shouldn't. Males neutered or not will still be interested in females so may try to wander off after neighbourhood females on heat.
Females squat when urinating so your gardens are safer although depending on what you feed you may end up with a few yellow patches in the lawn where urine killed the grass. The one problem with females is when they come into to season as it not only attracts unwelcome stray dogs but also has "hygiene" problems for indoor dogs. Getting a female spayed prevents it ever coming into season again so those problems are solved. The other thing about males & female is that dogs have manners and a male will not fight with a female even if she tries to start to it and females are usually less teritoral agressive etc anyway) so a female is lmuch less likely to get into fights if out exercisinbg off the lead etc.
I have had unneutered male and females and neutered females over the years and I would have to say that I prefer females because of the urinating and agression problems of some males and also that I prefer a speyed female as it removes all the problems associated with females being in season.

I agree with the answer above that says, in the end, let the dog pick you. BUT, keep in mind that male dogs tend to be more territorial and female dogs kill grass with their urine. After all is said and done, they are great company, love you no matter what you look like on a given day, and even if you just go outside to take out the garbage, they are thrilled to see you when you get back!

If adopting a female, you need to think about having puppies or getting her fixed. If adopting a male, then you will need to have him fixed also, because if you keep him in the house he will pick up his leg to urinate, or even if a friends dog comes over he will have to mark his territory. But both are great, I have 2 females and one male, and I love them like my children.

It all depends. If you are planning on having two dogs...males get along much better with females. Males tend to be more aggressive than females. I love both. Males are usually bigger and prettier sometimes. I have both. Love both. Had two males together once...didn't work. If I had to choose...I think it would be female for temperment.

If you get a male dog neutered they make just as good of a pet as a female. If you do not they may lift their leg on your furniture when they get older. When fixed males or females equally make wonderful pets. Good Luck and consider adopting from your local animal shelter. They havev many purebred dogs and mixed breeds that need homes.

Females taste better
1. First, kill a medium sized dog, then burn off the fur over a hot fire.
2. Carefully remove the skin while still warm and set aside for later (may be
used in other recpies)
3. Cut meat into 1" cubes. Marinade meat in mixture of vinegar,
peppercorn, salt and garlic for 2 hours.
4. Fry meat in oil using a large wok over an open fire, then add onions and
chopped pineapple and suate until tender.
5. Pour in tomato sauce and boiling water, add green peper, bay leaf and
tobasco.
6. Cover and simmer over warm coals until meat is tender. Blend in liver spread
and cook for additional 5-7 minutes.

From my experience, do not get a male chihuahua. I bought one and have had nothing but problems with him. I love him to death but he drives me nuts. My family has a female husky/shepard mix and 2 male dogs and never had problems with the female.
