If you are concerned about the litter box, you can train your cat to go outside and not have to worry about keeping the litter box clean. If you are concerned about the normal cat smell, if you get the cat young enough, you can teach it to tolerate baths (I don't recommend this, but others do).
These two answers would be for the most common odor concerns but are not the only possibilities.

I've always had cats.. Most I ever had were 6 but right now only 2- Because it is a lot of work having so many of them- My house has never smelled! WHY? because once the kitten is old enough they get neutered/spayed so not only are they fixed but when they pee their urine will not smell as bad neither will they 'spray' to mark their territory... Also use a good kitty litter (I use one made of Pine, i have tried many but the pine is the best one to absorb and control odors) clean their litter box 2x a day and change their litter every 2 days (assuming you only have one cat) I have 2 cats so i change the litter everyday! People that come to the house for the first time never realize i have cats till they come out of their hiding places and make their appearance!

Get the cat fixed, and make sure the litter box is cleaned out every day. Those are the only ways the cat will stink.
Cats are so nuerotic, they clean themselves. I've been owning cats since I was a baby, and not once do I remember owning a cat that smelled. Not even my car who thought it was a dog lol.
If you don't want an animal that smells, I suggest buying her a robotic pet. lol All animals smell, in some way. Wether it be their fur, ther litter box, or their breath. It's unavoidalbe. They aren't like humans. They can't take a shower everytime they get dirty or feel dirty, or smell.

You need to buy the good cat litter, the cat deoderizer sprinkle powder they sell near the cat stuff, You have to clean out the box every single morning, with the cat scooper. And probbly once a week sprinkle that powder in it and mix it around. If you miss one day of scooping the stuff out you will notice the smell. So just be sure to scoop every single day. And you should be fine.

The cats litter needs to be cleaned VERY regularly and I recommend getting the cat fixed ASAP to prevent spraying. Bowls of vinegar are a great idea too. Also use baking soda to keep your house smelling fresh.
Good luck convincing your mom, cat really are a great pet to have! They are great companions!

There's really nothing you can do. Sorry. I love cats, but when you have cats, there's going to be a smell. Some cat owners will deny it until they are blue in the face, but other people will notice it. The best you can do is try to keep it to a minimum. Clean the litter box as often as possible. Keep the cat and the cat's bed and toys clean. Vacuum rugs and furniture frequently, so hair doesn't build up. (You might not see it, but it's there, and it creates odor.)

not if you use a good quality kitty litter and clean the litter box. I have a small one bedroom apt, and a cat. You can't tell that there is one there. I use Fresh Step Crystal Blend cat litter which controls the litter on contact. It is great for small spaces.

I have used vinegar to neutralize the air. Putting bowls of vinegar out does help. Check this website out and it gives you more ideas. Not sure if your cat is peeing on floors or it's the general odor of cats.
