It's VERY rude! I can't believe that we actually have to post signs in our society asking people to follow the very basic ways to be courteous!

Due to the fact that this man or woman is in line and needn't do something however wait, I feel it is the much less offensive abuse of a cellphone cell. So, I just ignore it. Nonetheless, when any one is preoccupied on the cell phone and it reasons me an inconvenience of ready, for illustration, I feel it's terribly rude. Humans have to use their phones so that it does no longer intervene with the movements of others or their safeguard. I hate standing idle even as I watch for a telephone cellphone consumer to detect i'm there while they block the aisle at the same time looking, do not observe a green light while i'm riding or otherwise make me wait. God, I miss the mobile cubicles!!!!

Yes! That IS rude. Not only is it rude to the person that is ringing them up (you) but to the people that are behind them. Nine times out of 10, they arent prepared to pay so they have to try & balance a more-than-likely-unimportant conversation & dig thru a purse and/or wallet which prolongs the wait for other people. Next time someone is in your line on the phone, if possible, grab your cell phone & start talking.....or start talking to your nearest coworker about something unimportant & do them the same way they are doing you!

YES! I used to work in retail, and although I'm not a big cell phone person, it is exceptionally obnoxious. I had customers who were really nice about it, and it was obvious there was some drama or emergency they had to deal with. I even had a customer apologize and say "I'm really sorry, but I have to take this." All was well because her transaction was finished anyway.
The flip side are those people who don't even acknowledge you at all. Theoretically I could have overcharged them or whatever, but it's like you don't even exist. I once had a customer give me the index finger indicating to wait while I was speaking to him. I mentally threw my hands up and left the area, because I was not going to deal wait on him while he had a conversation.
I know there are important things and emergencies popping up, but to ask where to go on a date or gossip about so and so's breakup doesn't count.
Sadly it's a sign of the times. People are ruder and self-centered. Time Magazine had it right when they picked "You" as Person of the Year. It is all about themselves and to heck with everyone else.
A friend of mine said that everyone should work in customer service to know what it feels like to be screamed at, ignored, cursed, etc. And I agree. Please, people, remember you're dealing with another human being and at least give them respect.

I dont like to use my phone in public, because I dont like other people hearing my conversation. If I do get a call, I simply tell them I will call them back. I have a blue tooth, and talking on my phone has never been better while I am driving. I know what you mean, sometimes they are loud and you can hear everything their saying, not to mention they forget what they wanted and end up with a confused look on their face. That is a good point, to all people who do that. STOP IT.....

Agreed. I used to stand there and stare at them when I was finished checking since I couldn't say the total until they were paying attention. Either than or I'd interrupt them and give the total really loud to annoy them and get the point across. I cannot stand it when people do that, like you're not good enough for their time since you're the cashier? SOOOO rude.

I work at Mc Donald's and a guy comes through every morning talking on one of those cell phones that is also a 2 way radio and it is really annoying because I can hear it over my headset when he is at the speaker and his friend keeps talking to him on it while I am trying to find out what he wants. People also look at us with a rude look if we try to talk to them at the window about their order if they are talking on their phone....like WE are the ones being rude!

I don't think it's rude. And I don't think you should assume that they are intending to be rude.
First of all there's no reason you can't ring them up without saying a word to them. Your job is simply to account for the items that are leaving the store and to collect the money for them. You don't need to ask them how their day was in order to accomplish that.
Secondly, they may need to be on their phone. It may be important, or standing in a long checkout line may bore them (as it bores me) and they are talking to a friend to pass the time. Maybe instead of taking it out on your customers for being bored, you should suggest that your manager schedule more cashiers at busy times so the lines will not be so long. Maybe then people would have to start putting their groceries on the counter before they had a chance to pull out their phones.
OK, that's just my opinion but I don't think it's rude

I don't like it either. They missing the whole world around them. Don't you wish you could just smile and nod to them and say, "When you're finished..." and then ring up the next person? Yeah, that would be rude. But I bet it's a nice thought.
