The bible was written by men over many years. The religious believe is that it was written by men but with divine inspiration. The bible did not fall out of the sky. A lot of people sat down and wrote their message. Later on a group of people decided which books where supposed to be included in the bible and which ones should be left out. I do not know what the criteria for this was.
My disclaimer is that I'm not a religious person. I don't believe everything that is written in the bible. An example is the talking snake. In some bibles the snake is just a snake. In other bibles the nake is the devil. Either way snakes don't talk so there. This means the story is false or it is meant to be taken metaphorically. That being said there are many good messages in the bible. DO what fulfills your life.

There is a great deal of evidence to suggest that the creation of the Bible was supported by people in power to justify and support political or imperial aims.
King Josiah ordered the rebuilding of the Temple and while the rebuilding was going on Lo and Behold, an ancient text was discovered which predicted that a king named Josiah would unite the northern and southern kingdoms. This all happened when the collapse of the Persian Empire made it possible for the southern kingdom to exert influence in the north. (See "The Bible Unearthed," by Finkelstein and Silberman."
You might also want to read "Guns, Germs and Steel," by Jared Diamond, paying particular attention to the idea of "religion in service to kleptocracy."
The Bible was written by men, under the direction of other men with political ambitions.

Every Bible I have ever seen has had an earthly publisher. When I was a Baptist we were taught that the bible was written by men who were inspired by "God". When I asked the question "how do we know it was inspired by "God"? The answer was either because the bible says so or that the doubt in my mind was placed there by Satan.
Considering the number of Christian denominations that have come to be, it has become obvious that they don't all agree what it says either.

That is correct. For those who would say the Bible is not the Word of God, or that the Bible contains numerous errors I would say this: Paul could say in 2nd Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God." That's the Greek word, "theopneustos" meaning "God-Breathed." Every single word was given from God to 40 different men, and 2nd Peter 1:21 adds: "for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God." Now that was the Old Testament. The New Testament wasn't in existence when Paul used these verses. He was telling the churches in his letters what had happened in the past, but in John 16:12-13, Jesus talked about the coming of the New Testament. He says, "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come."
That's the New Testamant. And we can say with John 17:17, "Your Word is Truth." Today, we have 66 books written by 40 different individuals on 3 continents covering a period of 1,500 years and there's not one mistake, regardless of what some of the critics say. They haven't studied God's Word enough to know the truth. Among the writers we had kings, poets, philosophers, prophets, scholars and fisherman. And I want you to know we have all of the Word of God today. Someone says, "Yes, but we don't have the original manuscripts" Who said so?
We have copies totalling 24,800. Now, how do we know that they're right? Well, if you take 20 items and you compare them and 19 state one thing and one doesn't, then the one is in error. We've got 24,800 manuscripts that exist today to compare one against another and we have another 80,000 quotations from the church fathers, enough to put the entire Bible together with the exception of 11 verses. Take the 80,000 quotations from the church fathers and the 24,800 manuscripts for a total of 104,800 and you have all of God's Word dozens and hundreds of times. This is so because God's Word is literally flawless. After computers have compared millions, or even billions, of letters in analyzing the 104,800 manuscripts the texts are basically flawless. So, don't listen to the critics.

God inspired the Bible through forty writers.
Inspiration doesn't mean the biblical writer just felt enthusiastic, like the composer of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Nor does it mean the writings are necessarily inspiring to read, like an uplifting poem. The biblical Greek worked for inspiration literally means "God-breathed." Because God breathes out Scripture - because it originates from Him - it is true and inerrant.
Biblical inspiration may be defined as God's superintending of the human authors so that, using their own individual personalities - and even their writing styles - they composed and recorded without error His revelation to humankind in the words of the original autographs. In other words, the original documents of the their own personalities and literary talents, wrote under the control and guidance of the Holy Spirit, the result being a perfect and errorless recording of the exact message God desired to give to man.
Hence, the writers of Scripture were not mere writing machines. God did not use them like keys on a typewriter to mechanically reproduce His message. Nor did He dictate the words, page by page. The biblical evidence makes it clear that each writer had a style of his own. (Isaiah had a powerful literary style; Jeremiah had a mournful tone; Luke's style had medical overtones; and John was very simple in his approach.) The Holy Spirit infallibly worked through each of these writers, through their individual styles, to in errantly communicate His message to humankind.

i think it was written and edited by men. What we today call the Bible was only compiled in the 3rd and 4th centuries after Christ. And today there's are Protestant and Catholic and other versions of the Bible--so which is true?
Many Gospels were tossed out, because they didn't go along with what had become accepted in that area of the Mediterranean.

Almost certainly written by men. If god wrote it I think it would be infinitely more beautiful and clear than it is. It seems like a whole bunch of dubiously related stories have been thrown together and now we take this as the word of god.

Yes, it was and has been revised and rewritten by men for hundreds if not thousands of years. It is a book of stories, parables if you will that try to convey mans idea of what god should be. It is full of contradictions. Read "The God Delusion", by Richard Dawkins for a reasoned, intelligent insight into religion and how full of BS it is.
