Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they should only eat MEAT. They are not made to eat any grains or kibble that crunches in their teeth. Canned food is a far superior food to any dry on the market and raw food is even better.
Feeding a cat dry food is bad for their metabolism and kidneys over time. The lack of moisture and the high carbohydrate content is the biggest part of the problem. When looking for canned or raw foods, look for ones that have meat and meat meals as the primary source and an ingredient list that is free of any grains, vegetables, or fruits.
Fish and beef also shouldn't be feed too often and shouldn't be fed at all if your cat has a sensitive stomach. They are more likely allergens than proteins from poultry or rabbit.

My vet tells me that wet food is bad for their teeth. However, my mum's cats are fed some wet and some dry, and their teeth are fine, so as long as you don't feed exclusively wet food the cat will probably be fine.
My vet also said that supermarket cat foods (Whiskas, Iams, et al) are the equivalent of Burger King for us - fattening and not nourishing. However, lots of cats eat supermarket cat food all their lives and still live 15-20 healthy years.
Apply the same principles you do to your own diet - buy the best you can afford, have a treat now and then (weirdly, my cat likes tinned sardines much better than fresh fish!) and while you wouldn't want supermarket economy brands all the time, occasionally won't hurt. If you find something he likes and he's healthy, stick with it.

I am sure there are some good ones there, like Science Diet, etc.. I've noticed that dry food is good if it's one of the better ones, and wet food should be used judiciously, though you should be careful of the ash content in it, because that makes cats throw up a lot.
The BEST kid of wet food is raw meat.
Yup. Raw meat. It's got nutrients no one can can. The next time you make a steak or some burgers, give your cat some of the raw stuff. Their bodies crave it. Sometimes though, they are used to the canned crap and may turn up their noses, so opt for low ash content in cat food, and stay away from the really cheap stuff. It's like junk food for your cat.

You want to stay away from any wet food. Stay with a good dry food. Nutro or Natures Recipe for Cats both of them are really good foods. You can find them at your local Pet Smart or PetCo. You want to make sure you follow the directions on the bag on how much to feed your Cat. Also make sure you have fresh water available 24/7.

I've been feeding my cats canned Wellness for a few years now, and the improvement in their coats has been dramatic. They still get a little bit of dry food to nibble on during the day, but I believe feeding them canned food is best. See http://www.catinfo.org for more information.
Just switching to quality canned food helped my formerly overweight cat slim down nicely (the vet was amazed). My cats on Wellness look fabulous for their age, and they also don't vomit anymore - they used to when they were on a dry diet.
We have another cat who is on a dry prescription food on the vet's orders, and he has gotten really fat on it, and his coat isn't as soft as the other cats', and he sheds more. I'm working to transition him over to the canned version of his prescription diet to see if that helps.

Actually, dry food is the worst thing you can give your cat. There is nothing in dry food that is a part of the natural diet of cats. Cats are carnivores so they need meat, which you will find in wet food. The most recent research actually shows that dry food is the culprit behind some of the most commonly diagnosed diseases in cats these days, i.e. diabetes, crystals, etc...
So please feed your young'un wet food so you don't have major health problems later in his life. Of course there are better brands (fancy feast for example) but any wet will be better for your cat than dry.

I use IAMS and Science. I only use dry cat food and make sure the first ingredient on the food is lamb, chicken, etc. Do not buy cat or dog food that has grains as the first ingredient. If you have a long hair cat, I suggest the "hairball" type.

His stools are general for the 1st time ever. The uncooked poultry and liver value me 8-12$ CDN for 10-12 days of food provide or take. he's a kitten so he's eating greater. So it value me relatively under it would certainly value me if i offered a holistic canned cat food. That being suggested although, in case you choose for holistic canned cat food, attempt Merricks, Nature's style, Felidae, Evangers, or California Naturals to call some. Dry food is way better than canned. Canned food gets stuck in their teeth and causes decay, plus it makes their breath smell really bad (especially the really fishy wet food). I feed my cats Meow Mix which I know isn't high quality food, but I've never had a problem before and my cats have always been super healthy. Hope this helps!
