I don't know any parents that ever told a child that. I do recall very old cartoons from the 40's that portray a stork bringing a baby so maybe that's where the idea came from.

"If I have kids one day...."
If you were a parent you'd already know the anwer.
It's about age appropriate answers. To a very young child babies come from the storke. It isn't until later in childhood that the birds and bees can be told.

Maybe thier children are too young to understand the truth. Maybe the parent wants to keep thier children as whimsical and naive and protected as possible for a little while. Kids grow up too fast and know too much too soon. I think there is nothing wrong with a little white lie like that until they are old enough to understand the whole entire truth and consequence of child birth.

Mostly because they're too embarrassed to tell the truth. And honest to God, some really don't know! (Read some of the answers in the adolescent section--the ignorance is chilling).
They also get hung up on giving "too much" info and trashing their little ones' sensibilities. The truth is, kids' brains come with natural "readiness" filters that keep them from retaining anything they hear that they aren't old enough to understand, kind of a safety interlock. It's enough to make you believe in a benevolent higher power.

Mine are three and five and know exactly where babies come from. I didn't make a big deal out of it, so they didn't either. I have no idea why some parents lie to their kids about that sort of thing. Its like they think it's shameful or something, which is not what I want my kids to think.

My Mom was Irish and when she got mad We all ran..She was a very small lady, but a fighter for sure..She lost her fight again Cancer in 1993. Your Friend, poppy1 Your Friend, poppy1

Because God says sex is bad, and they're too scared to think otherwise.
PS. There is no "e" in "stork" and I only say this because someone made the same mistake in an answer.

Parents are embarrassed and can't deal with facts. It is better for kids fo find out about the facts of life from parents than on the playground at school.

because parents are lame and embarrassed by it. especially if it's their 3 year old coming up and saying "mommy, where do babies come from?" i had a friend whose father told her that babies came from "a seed" so she tried to grow a little brother by planting flower seeds in the backyard (she was only 5 at the time)
