she says that not enough oxygen gets into your system along with the alcohol

utter BS.

We have a system which actually prevents ANY air "getting into our systems" when we swallow - this stops food and drink getting into our lungs, which could cause choking.

If your deranged health teacher was correct then straws would carry a health warning or be banned altogether - and bars and restaurants would be littered with people who had passed out from lack of oxygen after drinking through straws.

Isn't it sad when teachers are so obviously less well educated than the people they are supposed to be teaching.

It's not necessarily dangerous, but it can CERTAINLY increase the rate at which you are inebriated. Scientific tests have determined this (link 1). All of those who imbibed beer through a straw performed worse on tests of drunkenness. If the effect were only psychosomatic, we would expect only about a third of them to. In that sense, then, it would only be as dangerous as getting drunk in the first place is (which, to be fair, can be pretty dangerous).

As to WHY this is... I haven't seen anything convincingly scientific. There are two theories I find slightly plausible, though:

One suggests that the jet of liquid alcohol comes into contacts with much more of your blood-vessel-rich mouth interior, and the higher surface area-to-alcohol ratio allows it to be absorbed faster than in the stomach. Sort of the same reason people who take nitroglycerin pills (or some illegal drugs) put it under their tongue.

The other major theory observes that by sucking through a straw, you are lowering the pressure above the fluid more significantly. Alcohol has a low vaporization pressure anyway, so the suction allows some of it to form a vapor and be pulled into your lungs to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream there. You would, in effect, be smoking your beer instead of eating it.

And while either is concievable, I think it will take more research to indicate whether one or the other (or both!) are so. I wouldn't mind seeing some confirmation on the original trial establishing the link, either!

usually you just drink it faster! thats whats dangerous. oxygen gets into your system through breathing. a totally different system...
enjoy. by the way beer should never be drunk using a straw, its just not cool. a simple rule, only use a straw if you would also be happy with a mini umbrella....

Actually, she has it backwards. MORE oxygen is combined with the alcohol when it is sipped through the straw. That may make it absorbed more quickly into the body. Read No. 35 on the following web page: http://www.yaerd.org/funfacts.htm

No. Oxygen doesn't go to the same place the alcohol does. It goes to your lungs. Your health teacher is crazy.

You don't breath through you stomach...

I answered this earlier... drinking beer through a straw is done to reduce the fizz so you don't swallow as much air... their is no danger in doing so...

That is just silly

Yes it is because when u drink anything with a straw and when u r drink comes to a finish and u suck the last sip, u r sucking air into u r stomach and that is what makes u r belly grow big. (hence u must have heard of those pot bellies) same analogy on chewing gum. Experts say chewing gum can also cause to have a big belly since u r letting lots of air into u r body.

It is total BS.

At the very worst, you tend to consume it faster and the effects of it can hit you much sooner than sipping it without the straw.

i attempted ingesting whiskey and cola with a straw yet i did no longer experience any distinction. I additionally tried ingesting beer with a straw even though it looked too gross so i ended earlier having the possibility to intoxicate myself.
