There is an urban legend that when Bertrand Russell was having a discussion with a little old lady after a speech he gave the said old lady opined that the Earth rested on a turtle and thats how we moved through space. When questioned by Russell about what the turtle rested on she replied that he was very clever but that he should know that it was 'Turtles all the way down'.

This is now my and many peoples standard reply to anything which involves the idea of an infinite regress regarding the origin of the universe. That and I believe that it is also a creation myth of one of the Eastern religions.

Edit:

This gives a fuller description...

All I know is that the turtle is considered to be the second incarnation of Vishnu in the Hindu religion.

It made me wonder too. I wanna know more! :)
