I recently got braces and my ortho gave me a pamphlet that says I cannot drink hot drinks nor eat extremely cold things like ice cream. I have never heard this before. What could be the reason for this?

look, if you stick with what that pamphlet says you'll be stuck drinking water for the whole time you have braces. What you want to do is eat carefully and clean up after words. What they are also afraid of is the temperature difference affecting the glue that holds your braces on. Just use some common sense and if one of them comes loose the worst you're going to face is a sigh while the ortho goes about sticking it back on.

hot and cold foods make your teeth shift just like heat and cold do for atoms in an element. Hot food will make your teeth actually spread out and grow (just a little) and this can disrupt the setting of your braces. Cold foods do the opposite and make the teeth crunch together (again, just a little). It's crucial to your smile that you follow the advice in that pamphlet

Probably because the metal causes your teeth to become extra sensitive. If you tocuh a piece of metal in the cold, Its much more colder than any other thing. if you tocuh a hot piece of metal, its hotter than most other things.

Pain is common after adjustment and may cause difficulty eating for a time, often several days. During this period, eating soft foods can help avoid additional pressure on teeth.

My friend who has braces said that you can't eat anything too hot or too cold for the first two weeks. She said it's extremely painful if you do.

Because the metal in your mouth acts like any other metal it holds tempatures its like puting a small peice of metal in the stove and then in the freezer it would eventualy crack becuase of expansion and contraction when heated and cooled yes it can take awhile for this process to happen but think of how long you ware them not to mention the headache of constant heating or cooling of the teeth its no fun !

Your teeth may be sensitive while you wear the braces, especially when you first have them put on, or when they are adjusted. Hot and cold foods will make your teeth hurt.

He/She probably meant for the first few days or so, as your teeth will be extemely sensitive.
Hope that helps!
