You're roughly the thousandth person to ask this question.
Why do believers have such a hard time understanding this? Why are they so bothered by it? Doesn't that say a lot about the quality of religious belief?
In fact if you look around here for a while, you'll see that the nonbelievers bring almost all of the mature participation to this section. The typical believers' "contribution" is bad reasoning, false statements (or to put it less "PC"-ly, "outright lies"), and arrogant insults. While there are some mature and honest believers who participate, they're a small minority, as the answers you've gotten here clearly demonstrate. At the same time, mature participation is the norm for the nonbelievers.
Of course there are exceptions in both cases, but the typical "PC" claim that the problem comes from both sides is simply false: if it were not for the nonbelievers, there'd be essentially no honest mature participation in this section of Y!A.

Just because I don't practice a religion doesn't mean that I don't find belief systems interesting to talk about or hear about. It intrigues me to see what people believe and how they defend those beliefs. I am currently studying the many beliefs of the different sects that emerged immediately after Christ's crucifixion and prior to the Council of Nicea. And I also studying how Bible scholars interpret and translate the Bible. Many people are interested in football. They watch the game but never play the game themselves. Have a great day!

There are many stories and beliefs that people bring to the world. To say, "What I believe is the only way!" is arrogant and ignorant, and simply insults people with different beliefs.
So yet again, welcome to another round of It's Also A Spirituality Section. Only the extremely pompous in society think everyone needs a super-duper invisible being to make their life worthwhile. Spirituality exists more in the absence of religion, not as a result of it.
Besides, I get more points here than in any other category due to the extreme obsessiveness of other users. Welcome me to Level 5!

I am Christian but I go to other sections because there are questions I feel I could answer or ask.
I don't think it is fair to exclude non-religious people; we all come to say or hear something - even if we don't like it. You see, this way, we learn more and get broader views on different issues which may crop up in our lives at some time, or we may know someone who has a problem and be able to help.

When you san "non religious people" I'm not sure if you mean people who don't believe in God, or people who don't go to a Christian church every Sunday. There are many that fall into the Spiritual category, with a fluid definition of a Creator, but do not subscribe to a standardized recorded set of "beliefs".

Most "non-religious" people are searching for something. If they have nothing to believe in, they then don't have a reason to live. Psychologists have been studying this for years and years. It always turns out the same. Everyone that says they don't believe in God or a higher being will always be searching for a belief. It is the only thing that really explains their existence. They may be "hardcore," or say that they don't understand how anyone can believe in a God that allows the world to suffer, but they are really calling out for something to believe in.
Let them be hard and rugged, it's only a sign of searching. They will find it. They always do.

Let's start with the fact that this is not simply the "religion" section. It is also the "spirituality" section. Everyone, be they religious or not, has the right to express their inherent spirituality. Further, why would it be forbidden for someone who does not believe as you do, to come here to understand your beliefs or to simply satisfy their curiosity? To the best of my knowledge, we still have the right to free speech, do we not? And further to that...
Do you have to be a serial murderer before you can watch a film like, "Silence of the Lambs" or "Monster?"
Must you be a police officer before being allowed to watch films like, "48 Hours" or "Lethal Weapon?"
Must you first believe with all your heart in the existence of fairies, magic potions and the like before you can watch a children's film made by Disney?
Do you get my point? Censorship diminishes us all.

The categories do not say what you believe or do not believe in- they are set up by category for questions that pertain to that category---they can break it down further..but the categories are GENERAL- I posted a question which I thought could best be answered by someone in that category- It is like sending AA meetings- people want to clean up their act so seek help from those that know better....likewise some that are cynical do not want to be...

Because this is a site where it is open to whoever wishes to participate. Although their participation may be a little retarded in you opinion, it is still open to everyone. Just ignore the comments that you do not agree with or are off color and go on with life. Good luck

They like to cause strife.
Proverbs 15:18 A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife.
But can you think of a better place for those lost souls to be shared the word of God with? All it takes is a seed to be planted in them, and it will never leave them. The Holy Spirit will always remind them what what they learned, and through that, they might turn to the Lord for Salvation. All in God's perfect time, according to His will. Just praise the Lord!
