Hi, I am a freshman at the University of North florida in Jacksonville. Since arriving in August, I have had trouble with certain things......dealing with roommates (I am an only child), making friends, time management, etc. Ireally miss my family, mainly my mom, who is an 2 and 1/2 hours away. I find myself falling into a bit of a depression. My mind is contsntly going, and my mood goes from being up to going down. I have trouble falling asleep, too, mainly because I cannot "shut my mind off". Are there any good self-help books that I can read? I have already picked up "Feeling Goofd" by David Burns and plan to start reading that this weekend.

Thank you.

The university I attend has a facility set up for students who are having troubles as you've described. It is part of our tuition and we can meet a number of times with a counselor. I would check and see what resources your school has available. Self help books are good for what they are, but sometimes it helps to talk to someone.

Best of luck!

Hi. Well i'm glad you are seeking help, but why don't you try going out of your comfort zone a bit. I know the self help books you intend on reading may in fact help you its just college can be very time consuming, take it from me I'm takiing 18 hours and working a job too, are you sure you want to add another book onto your already growing list? I say try something new. Maybe pledge for a fraternity or if your less outgoing, look into something that interests you. If all else fails talk to an academic counselor at your university. I wish you the best of luck really. Just a little hint for you too, we all take time to break out of our shells, make the best of your remaining years at school.

Find different groups at the college to get involved in and try the book Chicken Soup for the College Soul that was recommended by the others. Get involved in college activities.

That is a great book that has helped me a lot. I think you're on the right track. Also try "Chicken Soup for the College Soul". It will help put things in perspective. Good luck and don't give up.

hey kid, I am a sophomore at UNF too and I had the same problems you had during my freshmen year... what you need to is get out more, go to different on campus clubs that you are interested in or get a on campus job, for me an on campus basically paid to make friends. Your main problem is that you are probably spending too much time in the landing( its harder to make friends in the landing compared to the crossings and hall) try getting a radio show at osprey radio... you may enjoy that

well anyway good luck

no im only in 8th grade but it would help you if you would be more open. so people have an easier time relating if you are more open and "express" your self, you know telling jokes and and having parties(not wild parties that will get you into jail).
