well blutos probably right, but the traceable origins of ma it evolved from india.one thing ppl seem to forget is that the world as we know it has changed a lot since ma began.countries, boundaries, religions, countries have even broken away from the mainland so a country we may believe has an old martial art may not be true.and some ma only believe what they want to believe.ie: the oldest ma comes from korea.that is a fallacy.it may have come from the region we now know as korea but that doesn't make it korean.to many ppl believe that the words martial arts means originating in asia.

The history of martial arts around the world is complex. Most groups of people have had to physically defend themselves at some time and have developed fighting techniques for that purpose. Development of many martial arts was related to military development, but many of those techniques have been rendered technologically obsolete over the centuries. In the modern day, most populations would be more likely to face adversaries wielding firearms than melee weapons during battle. Furthermore, the preservation of a martial art requires many years of teaching at the hands of a good instructor to pass on the art for a single generation. Given these circumstances, not all martial arts from a particular era have been passed down to following generations.

Think this one through logically.
if martial arts originated in india, then that would mean that nobody ever fought, or killed anybody ever before india existed.
Martial Arts derives from a translation of the term "The Arts of Mars". Mars bieng the god of war. Martial arts literally means any tactic used in war to fight.
If you really want to look at it you would have to presume that the australopithicines invented martial arts as they are the farthest back in hominid evolution.
There is distinct evidence and fight manuals accounts, and surviving systems of martial arts that are non asian and date back before india.

According to legend, the monk Boddhidharma (Da Mo) traveled from India to China to visit the Shaolin Temple. He found that the monks were in poor phisical condition from the long hours of still meditation. They were barely capable of maintaining the Temple and not at all able to defend it. After his own meditating he began to teach them the exercises he had learned in his own training. These were known at the time as the "Bone washing marrow" and was intended to teach the monks to defend their temple and to improve their physical state of health. It was these basic exercises that have developed into into Shaolin Kung fu.
