I read all the answers hoping that I would find the meaning of life. I was genuinely disappointed when I didn't. Isn't that said? I'm looking for the meaning of life on an enternet chatroom. That ain't going to work. Look, I don't know what it's all about, but here's some quotes that help me almost everyday.
"Life ain't nothing but time and pressure. If you ever encounter to much or not enough of one, just apply the other."-KSU geology proffesor
"The smartest people in the world are only smart compaired to other people. Which ain't saying much." -Long Time Police Officer
"Always try to get more. People will think your shady if you don't ask for more." -Random Crackhead

The Buddha came up with an answer we call the 4 Noble Truths:
1. Everything is suffering (dukkha, roughly translates to "narrow space")
2. The suffering is due to attachments and aversions to things we falsely think will bring us happiness. (trishna)
3. There's a solution... we call it (Nirvana)
4. The way to get to Nirvana is via the "Path of Liberation" (Marga)
Zoned me out yet? Hang on. The reason why the Buddha says that ALL things are suffering is because EVERYTHING is impermanent and empty of inherent existence (comes into existence via causes and conditions). We grasp and hugely attach ourselves to things we think bring us happiness...
CIP: A new car... you work hard to buy the one that catches your eye, you buy it, you work hard to keep it, get an alarm system for it, windows tinted, maybe a set of Foose wheels... and BAM it gets dinged by an old lady in the parking lot... OR someone steals it... OR it eventually just darn well rusts out, the paint job erodes (like the '94 version of the Pontiac Grand Am), etc... VOILA... what you THOUGHT brought you happiness is suddenly... SUFFERING! And while you're at it... are you really having a BLAST at that job to buy a new one?
The idea, through Buddhism, is to learn how to subdue all the clinging, attachments and aversions in this life and learn altruism... because we all know that happiness is really real when you do something for someone else and reduce THEIR suffering in whatever way you can. You subdue (NOTE I did NOT say, you GET RID OF) and by default things start to "improve"....
Hope this gives you an idea of how the BUDDHA sees it... and through analytical thinking and meditation... I agree.

As soon as I read your question in the subject header, I immediately thought of this...from the movie of the same name...
ALFIE
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
What will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
Something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
And you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie
Hey, that's as good advice as anything else, ya think?

its all about living. lol.
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but, rather, to skid in sideways, with champaigne in one hand and chocolate in the other, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming; WOW! WHAT A RIDE!!"
i think people should not be sorry worried about what might happen in a life that is not proven to exist, but enjoy the one and only proven life. we want a better future for our children and our children's children. we want to have fun with life, and perhaps help others enjoy life as well. its about making use of the short amount of time we have.

In my opinion life is a combination of both those things and so much more.Life is about living and breathing learning and teaching.Making mistakes, falling on your face, getting hurt, crying, feeling the disdain of others, standing still.Learning and teaching from mistakes made, getting back up after falling on our face, healing, laughing, learning to understand others and their lives, views, thoughts, and feelings.Moving forward after taking a small break on the path of life.
Life is about so many things and how they effect us how they teach us what we choose to teach from it how we grow and what we put into it.
Life is about the moments that others create along our merging paths and the moments we create when we walk the path alone. Its about the truly horrible moments that we don't think we can handle and the truly beautiful moments that happen. Its the moments we survive when all our hope is lost and the moments that happen when we aren't looking....

Ultimately it's about learning and personal growth but having a bit of fun along the way is okay.

Life is about what you make of it. Do whatever your heart tells you. Do you desire to help others or have fun? No one ever said you couldn't do both. Just do what makes you happy. Just don't break the law and hurt people.

For me, life is all about fun and being happy. Although, helping others makes me happy, so it's kind of both for me. :)
