Because "Creation Science" doesn't even have a veneer of credibility.
Biblical literalists would love to have our schools teach that the world was created in 6 days plus a coffee break and that's all there is to it. However, the laws mandate that our schools teach science, which happens to include evolution. The literalists then said, "Well, teach creation as if it were also science," but the schools can't do that because it's not. Intelligent Design also isn't science, but unlike creationism, there are still some people who haven't figured out that ID isn't science.
If the schools are presenting one coherent, evidence-based theory of the origin of life, then it's a lot harder for the churches to say "That's not true, believe me instead." But if the schools are saying "It could have happened this way or it could have happened that way," then it's much easier for the churches to come in and say "_This_ is the way it _really_ happened."

It is biblical. Not every church wants it thought in school by the way.
Im sure there will be some cranks who will answer this in whatever twisted rhetorical way they can to persuade that intelligent design is just as good an explanation as a scientific one. Do yourself a favour, listen, think, read and make your own decision.

Intelligent design is Biblical in that there is a Power and Designer (Planner) behind how every thing came into being, and that is God. The Bible says so in the first 5 words "In the beginning, God created..."

It's not so much the church as it is a couple radical protestants. They came up with the idea and it was immediately attacked for being the ridiculous thing it is, however the ignorant masses caught wind of the "debate" and saw it as a christian vs science thing and joined in the battle cry without knowing exactly what they're rallying for.
Most of the actual churches (even the Vatican and the Pope) dismiss ID and claim that it's not science in the slightest and is a stupid thing that is misguiding the faithful.

The question is invalid. Intelligent Design is biblical that is the reason for Churches wanting it to be taught.

The idea of intelligent design is based on the story of creation in Genesis. In other words. God is intelligent and He created the world. That's it in a nutshell.

ID is another name for the Argument From Design and Creationism and is based on the Christian origin myth. Why that myth rather than any other is a moot point.

The church wants it taught in school so that children who they think can't decide of think for themselves won't be poisoned by factual science.
I'm a Christian, but I don't want it taught in school because it doesn't belong there. My views on the Bible are not fundamentalist, but for those poor souls who are, they live a very sad and angry life.

It's about political power. They are trying to get around the 'separation of church and state', thing in our Constitution.
Here's two good books on the subject. And a profile of the author.
