I love questions like this. Shows that anyone can get a drivers license.

And despite the crappy advice you are getting from some folks here, it is the law. You are required to have it with you when you are driving.

You don't. There is no legal requirement to haver your drivers license on your person. I don't think you even HAVE to carry it when you are driving. However if stopped by the police it will cause a lot of grief.

You should never carry your social security card in your wallet by the way.

When you're driving, it's a condition of you being allowed to drive on the road.

Everywhere else, it's the only form of official ID that most governments give out, and is the common denominator.

But you have a right to refuse being asked for ID if you're in public without just cause.

By law you are supposed to carry some form of ID on you at all times. (Joggers sometimes just carry a piece of paper woth their name addy and contact info. If you dont want to carry the physical license you can always copy it and carry the paper copy I guess.) You must be able to identufy yourself. But I know alot of people that dont carry ID.

You are required to show proof of identity. If you cannot not, you can legally be arrested and detained by the authorities indefinitely until they decide that they are satisfied as to who you are. Even if you have ID on you you can legally be arrest and held on suspicion of being a subversive. This is a result of 9/11, something else that we can thank our politicians for. Don't blame the Arabs or the Muslims---it's US politicians that have made the rules.

This is used to identify you either by police (if you did something wrong they need to know who to charge with the crime- writing "Some Person" on their report won't cut it), and this can be used to ID you if you are in an accident and unconscious. It should have you current address on it for the same reasons. The ID can show you're the wrong person, too, if a description fitting yours is given of a criminal, but the police know the criminal's name.

Because it is the law. However, you don't have to talk to police and have fifth amendment rights. They would have to impound your car and arrest you and read you your rights and you still don't have to talk to them. Guaranteed, they'll make your life miserable until you talk, but you don't have to talk or give them any information whatsoever without a warrant and a warrant can only be issued upon probable cause -- at least that's what the law says.

If for some reason you drop dead you can easily be identified instead of being in a morgue somewhere unidentified as john doe

You don't have to carry it when you're NOT driving, but most people do so, because it is their main ID.
