It is easier to get a cat and dog to get along than to get two cats to get along. Bring the kitten into a room the the dog is always happy and relaxed in. sit it down on the floor and then ignore them. The dog will try to find out what this "thing" is but if it tries to chase then the kitten will soon get out of reach. Let them alone and they will very soon find their own level and the kitten will learn what it is or is not allowed to do around the dog. You will be surprised at how quickly they will become friends,

VERY CAREFULLY! Keep them separated for a little while, and when you get ready for the first introduction, have the kitten inside a cat carrier. Then, you bring in your German shepherd with you to "Look at the baby". He/she will be very interested, and naturally want to sniff all over. This is fine, but keep the kitten in the carrier while you are talking to the dog and showing her how nice the "new baby" is. After a couple days of this, you can leave the kitten inside the cat carrier, and place it on the floor so that your German Shepherd can get a real good sniff of the kitten, and the kitten can get used to seeing the "Big Kahuna". Now, best case scenerio here is: hopefully, this is a female German Shepherd who has had at least one litter of her own. If so, she just may take on the "mommy" instinct again and be very protective of this "little baby", somewhat adopting it as her own. This would be ideal. If the dog is a male, this process may take a little while longer but, keep at it, and when you feel it is safe for you to take the kitten out of the carrier, PLEASE be holding the kitten when the face-to-face, un-protected introduction takes place. If you are not working outside the home, then you should have pleanty of time for several of these face-to-face meetings a day before you can feel free and safely let the kitten loose in the house. Don't drag this process out too long, as you don't want this kitten to be isolating from the rest of the family. A lot depends on the dog, too. Has the dog been around cats much? Does he/she chase cats anytime it gets the chance? YOU ultimately have to be the judge of this. The kitten will adjust as long as the dog is NOT chasing it all the time. And, remember--cats are FAST so it's unlikely that this dog is going to eat it before it can get away from the dog. Good luck to you and the new family "introduction".

I would not leave a 4 month old kitten alone with a 90 pound dog. Sit in the room with them together, and watch the interaction. It is only natural for a kitten to want to run, and even more natural for a dog to chase anything running. So it's going to take time. Do it slowy, increasing the time each day.
We all love our dogs and we never think they will do any harm to anyone, but they are dogs....
On a lighter note, I've seen big dogs run away from little cats, scared to death of them....you never know!!!! :)

So many people say this is impossible, when it's actually one of the easiest things to do. I introduced my kitten to my 3 dogs by taking her outside with me, allowing the dogs to sniff and lick her, and when she had enough of the attention she would let me know by meowing. I also allowed the dogs inside the house to hang out with me and Sophie (my kitten). After about 3 months of doing this she and 2 of my dogs became really good friends. Phantom, the dog she isnt so friendly with, fears her because she whacked him on the nose after he sniffed her butt.. lol. It was the funniest thing. Make sure to constantly watch your dog. Let the kitten do whatever she wants (walk around him, sniff, etc..) but don't let go of your dog. They'll eventually become friends and sleep around the house together. =) good luck.
