Child Molesters are the problem, not the parents.
It is so sad that they wanna rape kids.

Because people assume their kids will be safe walking a short distance to school or standing at a bus stop. After all, they SHOULD be safe.
However, with the way society is today, you can never be really sure. A lot of kidnappings happen close to home.
Some parents cannot bring their child to school because they have to be at work. That's life. You do the best you can. And obviously if you live close to school, you are not in need of a bus. Most parents let their kids walk since it is close.
Personally, I choose to have my son dropped off and picked up by a parent every day. I just feel safer knowing that I saw him, with my own eyes, go into school and come out of school. Plus, the bus drivers around me drive like lunatics and I do not trust them with my son's life.

Some kids live close to the school, like I did when I was little (8-11years old). My school was literally a hop, skip and a jump away and when I left from my mom-moms house whose house was around the corner from the school, we would walk in groups plus there would be a million other kids walking, but AT THAT TIME it wasn't a big deal, but NOW...there is no way in hell I would let my daughter walk by herself at the age I was then with all this stuff that has been going on. I'll either walk with her or make sure she's walking with a group of children, or I'll drop her off and pick her up, or have myself or a relative make sure she gets off the bus safely. Its a shame that we have to be sooo cautious nowadays, but people are sick in the head and prey on our young ones, and parents should do as much as they can to be sure our children are safe.

I have always lived in a small town so I walked to school but I always had my older brother (2 years older) and his friends to walk with. It was only a couple of blocks but the neighbors watched out for us pretty much. I think alot of parents aren't fit to have children and raise them but who are we to judge. I am not going to make it my life long goal to sit on my front porch and watch the children go to school (Now I live right across from an elementary school, once again in a small town) I know I am not going to be a perfect parent but I will try to be. I also do not want to strip my children of their independence and self esteem by being right with them at all times. Alot of parents also teach their kids to run or yell when a stranger confronts them. I really don't see a problem with it if you take the right precautions but as far as just letting your kid play in traffic then they parents should be smacked.

when I was a kid, I walked to school everyday by myself. I am now 27 years old and a new parent and I can say that I will never let my son walk to school by himself. The world has changed too much and it is just to dangerous. Most parents never think that it will happen to their kids until it does. There are alot of things in this world that we as parents can control and some we can.
You take what precautions you can and just pray that your children stay safe.

I think is it so abnormal to do this. I have never left my children alone ..... Never. I have taken them to school, picked them up and stayed at home with them even when It was not a good financial decision. I think it is a choice to become a parent and If you do not want to be responsible for the child you bring into the world then you shouldn't have them. I think that people that pop out kids just to leave them to be raised by themselves or a daycare are bad parents. I know thats a bold statement but lets be real, Why did you have them? For them to spend 8-10 hours a day with total strangers? Stupid...

I think that many of them just don't care anymore or they are just too lazy to get up off the couch to make sure their kids get to where they are going safely, or they are just not smart enough to realize all the things that could happen to their child in that short amount of time. I see small 5 and 6 year olds walking home by themselves and I am scared for them. Or maybe parents trust people too much and don't think it could happen to them---but, It does. My kids are 9 and 11 and I walk them to the bus-the world is a messed up place and I don't want anything to happen to mine I agree with Christine and I am the same way!.

My lord, I have a 2yr old down the street that I know of, and he was alone outside in the cold. His mother was cheating on his father with another man. I wouldn't allow myself to take care of children if I let that happen. I see a 6 yr old running down the street. To me, I am thinking, he was just 5 and still kind of like a toddler to me. Why do I see less parents waiting for their children at the bus stop? My mom didn't have to be outside with me at the bus stop in elementary school, because it was right outside our house. It's strange, if people think that their 6 yr old is responsible enough to go down the street or on another street, why don't they just give them a cell phone or the keys to the car. Jeez! People are aware, and they just don't care. It's hard to take in when somebody says, I didn't want my children and I still don't. (my sister said that) I couldn't breathe if I didn't know that my children were okay. Some people are idiots and shouldn't be allowed to have children.

10,000,000 kids in the US, about 7000 are missing (according to the NCMEC). That's appr 0.0007% of children. Whereas 0.02% of children are kidnapped by family members. I'd say it's more risky to leave them with family. Okay, so now I'm being sarcastic.
While i understand the fear of taking the risk, it is so very minimal that to take way the ability to develop freedom and autonomy of a child is not appropriate. Once a child is old enough to understand basic rules and safety, they should be allowed to walk. In our family that's been about age seven with a partner, five with an older child, and nine alone.

When my daughter goes to school, she will be walked to and from by her mother or myself! I guess some people still feel their kids are "safe" to do so? It is always good to get to know the people you live around, if they are seniors and are home alot, they may be able to see the kids on their way to school. Kind of watch out for them.

Alot of reasons:
-Some kids don't live that far from school so it's no big deal
-It's good exercise
-Some kids like to walk to school with their friends instead of riding a noisy bus
I do however disagree with younger kids walking to school alone. But if they're old enough (10-11 or so) I think it's fine.
