He used to have small kibbles, but I've gotten him big kibbles in hopes that it will slow him down. However, that didn't help. Even when I feed him one kibble at a time, he swallows. I worry about his speed eating because I know it can potentially be dangerous.

he's 3/4 chihuahua and 1/4 doxie, so he's a fairly small dog at around 10 lbs. the food i feed him is dry - Science Diet.

I do have 2 other small dogs who both eat slowly and take their time to chew.

I do not know if you keep food down all the time or not? That usually discourages dogs from gulping down their food all at one time. Go back to the smaller kibble please as would not want him to choke on big bites.

Some dogs are natural "grazers" and some do eat fast. Keeping food down at all times will help with this, if you don't already. Is his weight good? Really active and burns off the food? If all that is fine then he is just a quick eater. If he checks out fine with the vet then I wouldn't be too concerned.

My boxer does the same thing.
Most dogs do it when theirs other dogs around and they hog it down before the other dog can get it.
If you have no other dogs, then he's prolly just a speed eater.
How many times do you feed him?
I'd stick with the smaller kibbles just to be safe.

I think it is just a dog thing. My dog does the same thing no matter how big/small the food is... In fact all of the dogs I have come in contact with are all like that. I think they are just worried some one is going to take the food before they can get it down. Or your doggie is a piggy like mine :)

You need to take the food away at times, and repeat to the dog "slow down"-"slow" give him/her the food. She will realize that the food will always be there and not disapear.
I leave the food for my two girls out 24 hrs a day. They know its not going anywhere, they eat when they are hungry. And slowly.
Also, she may be really hungry. Let her eat till she is full. She will learn.

if he is doing this even when you feed him one kibble at a time, i wouldn't worry about it. he justs likes to scarf his food! if you are really worried, give your vet a call and just ask what they think. doesn't cost anything to call and you might get some piece of mind!

He just eats fast. It shouldn't be a problem as long as they are bite sized pieces. If you give him something bigger than his mouth and he manages to get that in without chewing, then that is a problem.

Try giving him soft food? Or wet doggy food.

What kind of dog is it and how old? What kind of food you feed him and how often and how much?

Make sure you stay away from putting him on any wet food its very unhealthy for the dogs.

You will never stop him eating this way - its just his nature, some dogs nibble others wolf things down. Just content yourself that they are taking their food. If it were doing them any harm then they would be sick every time they finished eating.

I had a boxer that ate like this and he lived for years. You could feed him tiny amounts throughtout the day. Talk to your vet.
