I thought it was pretty much accepted that she is a portrait of a real woman called Lisa Gherardini.

I am absolutely fascinated by Shayna's answer. I've been studying Art History at degree level and I've not come across a single tutor who believes it is a self-portrait of Leonardo.

I'd also love to know what these facts are that speak for themselves. I'm not being funny, or critical, or anything like that. I've obviously heard the theory that it is a self-portrait, but I've never seen any facts to back it up...........could you post a source Shayna?

I'm with the_lipsiot on this one. The lastest issue of ArtNews confirms his answer:

"Lisa Gherardini, wife of the wealthy, socially prominent silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo"

painters in the 1500's made their money by doing portrait commissions of the well-off. It was their trade, and an important one, as their was no such thing as photography at the time.

The latest novels of fiction on Leonardo are just that, fiction. The fallacies of today's media cause one to have to deeply research such deceitful "updates" of history, because more than often, they are just lies to create scandals, sensations and sell more papers, magazines and books.

Self portrait...it is pretty much settled if you have ever taken an Art History Class. I have taken several classes in high school, college and even in the community in and Art History Club. If you are looking for everyone to agree upon that...you will never get that in this situation or any dispute. The facts pretty much speak for themselves.

Her mystery of being real or not will never really be confirmed. If she truely was alive she was the most beautiful woman ever.

Yeah, some say this is how Leonardo would have wanted to look like as a woman. He was gay, you know.
