Does anyone have one of those self cleaning litter boxes? Do they really work.

The LitterMaid brand are the best! So easy, and no mess.

Only problem. My cats LOVE to watch the arm go across the litter. They have learned that by them just getting into the litter box, about 10 minutes later the 'fun' begins, and they watch and try to grab the cleaning rake. Once the cleaning cycle is done, back into the litter box they go, just to trip the sensor so they can sit and play with the rake again.

It got so bad, that we unplugged the box for a while, only turning it on when we knew the cats had used the box. Now, we have it plugged in all the time, but the cats will sometimes play their old games again... just not as often.

I don't trust them and either did my cat! The one I had worked by a bar that scooped through the litter once a sensor in the bottom was tripped. It was suppose to go off after the cats weight was lifted off of it. However, the cat moved a certain way and tripped the thing while she was still in it! So much for that experiment! If you need this because you will be away for any good amount of time, say an over-nighter. Try putting out a second tray so the cat will have back up! The automatic thing was a waste of money and it freaked the cat out big time!

I have never bought one of those yet because of the cost, but I found something that is just as good in my opinion. It is a litter box that actually has a sifter built into it and comes in 4 parts including the lid. All I have to do is lift up the inner litter box and all the litter falls through except for the poo and clumps. That I just dump into a bag and pitch. It is easier than sifting everyday and cats aren't afraid of it.

It is available from Petsmart and runs about $30.

Even with the high price, they are still wanted by all litter box haters! They do in fact work. Its perfeect if you work all day and don't have the kind of time to be slaving at the cat box! They cost about $80-100 though, and are rather large, but perfect because you never have do clean it out...only grab the bagged doodie and bin it. Every now and then you clean out all the litter, but I think they work great.

One of my clients had a self-cleaning litter box, and yes they work very well. Usuallly found at pet stores for around $100 and up. An automatice rake runs over the top of the litter after being used, and scoops it into a container in the front to be emptied. They work real well with scoopable litter in jugs or boxes.

I had a friend who bought and the cat was terrified of it, also when the cat finally started using it he said there was so much clean up because the poop got stuck in the bar that shove it into the bottom. I can't say there bad I've not tried one but thats' what he told me and he threw it away. I sick to gool old clumping cat litter it's not smelly and if you scoop twice a day it takes next to nothing to keep it clean.

better question do you really need a self cleaning litter box, if your home 2x a day (AM&PM) then you cleaning is the simplest and most effective way. The self cleaners still have to be emptied so the poop and clumped urine is still there giving off odors

I don't have one but has a friend that does.she has three cats but has several boxes.Because one litter box for that many cats could not keep up.Is great if you are away alot and need it.But if I was you would save my money and just buy a good litter and scoop myself.

yup, its pretty sweet. the only prob is that whenever anything hits the infared in the box it automaticly cleans on its own even if nothing is in the box. i just wish the sides were higher bc my cat kicks litter out of it easily. but all in all it is better then just a regular box full of litter.

I have heard many stories of them malfunctioning and won't stop cleaning (even with the cat in the box) which scares the cat and the cat may not want to use it. or just the noise it'self if it functions properly may also scare the cat and it may not want to use it or it just doesn't clean at all and you have to clean it yourself anyways.....it is a lot of money to spend on something that there is a good possibilty your cat won't want to use so you'll have to get a regular one anyway.
