The Blessed One,went to the Sala Grove of the Mallas,in the vicinity of Kusinara and asked Ananda to prepare for Him a couch between the twin Sala trees, with the head to the north. Then the Blessed One lay down on his right side,in the lion's posture, resting one foot upon the other, and so disposed Himself, mindfully and clearly comprehending
At that time the twin Sala trees broke out in full bloom, though it was not the season of flowering, and the blossoms rained upon the body of the Tathagata and dropped and scattered and were strewn upon it in worship of the Tathagata. And celestial mandarava flowers and heavenly sandalwood powder from the sky rained down upon the body of the Tathagata.
The Blessed One then told Ven.Upavana who was fanning Him to move aside as deities from the tenfold world-system who had gathered to see the Tathagata complain that Ven.Upavana was blocking their view.
The last word of the Tathagata:"Behold now, bhikkhus,I exhort you:All compounded things are subject to vanish.Strive with earnestness!"
The Buddha was 80 years old when he died.

Buddha is generally thought to have been born in 563 BCE and died in 483 BCE meaning that he survived for about eighty years.
He was married at the age of 16, but gave up his family to become a wandering monk at age 29. He reached enlightenment at age 35. For the remaining 45 years he taught his doctrine to a wide group.
At age 80 he fell violently ill after eating a meal given to him by a black smith. It was then that the Buddha died or passed on to his final nirvana.

Well, most of the information is apocraphal, about Gautama Buddha.
However, many stories say he was given meat or mushrooms and died of food poisoning. Some of them have him being poisoned. He was 80, I believe.

If I remember correctly, he went out into the woods when he knew it was time and laid down and simply passed away. He was pretty old, but I don't remember the exact age.
Part of the story is that his last meal made him very sick, but it is not generally held that that was necessarily the cause of his death.
