Depends on whether you are interested in Tibetan or Zen.
I really can't answer regarding Tibetan, but there's a good book written decades ago called "the way of zen" by Alan Watts.
It's a very good primer.

Read 'Introduction to Buddhism - An Explaination of the Buddhist Way of Life' by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, it's one of my favourite books.
The Dhammapada is another essential read, it is believed to be the direct word of Buddha, and there are numerous translations/commentaries you can find, some are simpler than others.

There are many MANY sites online too, such as www.buddhanet.net, this site has everything you could ever really need on it.
Avoid zen to begin with, zen is NOT simple, yet it IS pure simplicity.

The Complete Idiot's Guides are usually the best which I recommend as book launching points. The one on Buddhism is a nice overview with the basic ideas.

The best place to start, in my opinion, is Wikipedia. Once you've gotten an overview from that, try the "For Beginners" series (Eastern Philosophy for beginners, Buddhism for beginners) They are nice, comic-type books that give a great introduction to the subject. Read the Eastern Philosophy one first - it puts Buddhism in perspective.

Why not start at the beginning and have a look at some of the teachings of the Buddha himself.
